Do you have a little princess in your life? What books does she love?

I have a grand-niece (my niece's daughter) that is turning 4. It's been recommended that I get her books for her birthday. I'd preferably like to get a box set.

Any recommendations?

My suggestion would be chapter books that can be read aloud to her. A couple popular choices in our house would be Magic Tree House books (there are ~40 in the series, but I've seen sets of 4), Ramona books (in the first book, "Beezus and Ramona", Ramona is 4, so your grandniece coudl probably relate), and the "Little House" series. Although these are chapter books, they tend to have simple language that younger children can readily follow. And, who doesn't love to curl up in a lap and hear a good story?

One of my DD5's favorite books has been "Pinkalicious". A very cute book about a little girl who eats so many pink cupcakes that she turns pink.

Kevin Henkes -I looked on Amazon there is not a boxed set -but they should be easy to find.
My favorites are Lilly's Purple Plastic purse (about a mouse who gets her feelings hurt at Kindergarten cause she can't leave her new purse alone)
and Chrysanthemum (about a mouse who wishes she had an ordinary short name instead of Chrysanthemum)

Dont forget Berenstein Bears or the Little Critter Books. I loved both of these as a child.

Our DD4 enjoys all books. She received a Fancy Nancy book and doll for her birthday and loves them!

We love the Olivia books at our house. I don't think they come in a set, but there is 5 or 6 of them. The plot lines are adorable, and the pictures are just as cute.

Junie B. Jones or the Rainbow Fairy books -- they both come in boxed sets.

Harold and the Purple crayon. There are several adventure books starring Harold. :) Big Chickens and Big Chickens Fly the Coop. Lots of fun to read. Great pictures. How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World. Fun book. Bear Snores On, there are a number of Bear books out.

Mrs. McTats and Her House Full of Cats. That one is an ABC book. Really cute.
Tikki Tikki Tembo maybe considered for older kids but mine enjoyed it when they were 4.

If I think of some more, I'll post them. :)

My girls liked the Jamie Lee Curtis books. The title that I remember is "When I Was Little" but she has several. They also loved the book "Wodney Wat" about a rat who couldn't pronounce his "r's". It is really adorable.

I give all 4 year old girls who do not yet have it The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch.

Just before the wedding a dragon comes and burns down the kingdom and kidnaps the prince. The princess can only find one thing in the kingdom which was not burned up to wear--a paper bag. She wears it and sets off to rescue her prince. She is creative and smart and does rescue the prince who tells her to come back when she looks like a princess (her hair is messed up, she has ashes on her face and she is after all only wearing a paper bag). She tells the prince that he may LOOK like a prince but he is really a bum and she goes off on her merry way.

I lvoe the moral here, and it is so funny as it is presented that every kid (boy or girl) I have ever read it to has loved it. Munsch has many fun and funny books for the 3-7 set so you could probably do a set. My kids also loved:
Make up Mess
Mortimer
Up, Up, Down

Munsch's Love You Forever is also very well loved by many people.

ETA you can read about any of Munsch's book--or listen to him read them--on his website, here:

I am so glad you posted this thread because it made me google and find this sight!

Robert Munsch Treasury. We got miles and miles out of those books-there are two of them. He wrote the book Love You Forever which is a tear-jerker for some people, but the books in his treasuries are just funny.

I babysit for a friend, and her 4 year old daughter looooves the Madeline books. She especially likes Madeline Says Merci: The Always-Be-Polite Book :cutie:

The Pigeon books by Mo Willems! DD, DNiece and DNephew love them. They're not in a boxed set (I think) but are so cute. There's two different sizes (hardback and board book), DD prefers the hardback ones. We started with 'Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus' and were quickly sucked in. He also does 'Knuffle Bunny' and 'Knuffle Bunny Too' which are two neat stories about a girl your grandniece's age. :thumbsup2

Eloise, Fancy Nancy, Olivia, the Berenstein Bears, Dr. Seuss, Richard Scary and Robert Munsch books are all big hits here too. :)
