Hello,
if you book a stay for x number of days at a particular resort, are you allowed to later cancel part of this reservation and get the points back?
Thanks
Matthew

It depends upon what you are canceling. For instance, if you book a rwo bedroom lock-off, you can not cancel the one bedroom or studio portion of the room and keep the other portion without making an entirely new reservation, based upon availability.

If you are talking about simply dropping some nights from an existing reservation, yes, you can do that without penalty as long as it is at least 31 days prior to your schedulaed arrival at the resort. The points will return to your account in the current use year. They can be used or banked, as long as you are within you normal banking window.

If you cancel 30 days or less from arrival, the points will go into a holding status, they can not be banked and must be used for reservations made no more than 60 days prior to arrival.

If you cancel on your schedulaed arrival day, all points are considered used, and they are lost.

The above rules apply to reservations at DVC resorts only.

If you are changing a reservation at a non-DVC resort through the Disney Collection, the points will be "reservation points" and will have to be used for that type of non-DVC reservation, not a DVC resort reservation.

You cannot cancel nights in the middle of your reservation without rebooking some of the other nights. For example, you booked to arrive on Wed and check out on Tues. You then decide that the weekend points are too high and you want to cancel Fri and Sat nights. You will need to also cancel the beginning of your reservation (W-Th) or the end (Sun-M), then rebook those nights. This is only a problem if those "canceled but still wanted" nights are not available at the time. -- Suzanne

This is true, and you'd be wise to book the required W-TH or SUN-MON before cancelling those middle nights, or you may be sorry.

Related question---
I know we will go to WDW in May. DH is accountant and has audit sometime then, but will not know exact dates until March. We will go say May 8th or May 15th. If I have enough points can I book both weeks as one reservation and then cancel the days we will not use?
Then would they apply my banked 2007 points and return the 2008 points to my account?
Thanks!!

If you have enough points, and don't know which week you are traveling, I'd make them 2 separate reservations. If you do cancel the earlier week (assuming that is when the previously banked points are used) you can ask Member Services to then apply those banked points to the reservation you keep, freeing up the 2008 points so you can bank them. You have to ask, but they will do it.
