Thanks

Yes, I did this recently. BUT, just like when you purchase air with $$ and rebook, those points must now be used within one year of the original "purchase" date. Any points used and then credited back have lost their "no expiration date" status. :)

I don't believe so about the points expiring. And the fact that they don't expire gives so much more flexibility than booking with $$!

I found this:
Your points don't expire**.

**Points don't expire as long as you have flight or Partner earning activity every 24 months. Benefits apply to points transactions. All Rapid Rewards Rules and Regulations apply.

You are right about the "base" language; BUT, I took some of my points and "purchased" a ticket. Once I did that and then rebooked using a lesser amount of my points, the points that I used in my initial booking, and only those points, now have the expiration date of one year for any credit. I absolutely know this to be accurate because that is what my "refund" status says of those left over points.

Hmm - looking at the rebooked ticket it says "All travel involving funds from this Confirmation Number must be completed by the expiration date" but I didn't use any funds - only points. And the SW website say left over points get deposited back into your account. That would suggest to me also that the points wouldn't have an expiration date. I'm gonna reseach this some more before I get too adamant about my position. : )

I called and talked with SWA right after they changed the points system because I wondered if the points would have expiration when they have been reserved, cancelled and put back into my account. They said that as long as my account is active, then the points are good.

We take friends and pay for their airfare. Since $$ travel funds are not changeable to another person any longer, we use points for their airfare, knowing if they cancel on us, we can redeposit the points and use them for someone else.

I tend to agree now that I really broke the language down. When it showed an expiration date on the reissued reservation and also said the reservation was not transferable, I took it as the same rules as if cash was paid [unused travel funds]. BUT, the fact that the website states the points are deposited back into your account seems to rebut that statement . . . and I am absolutely tickled that I was wrong [and I usually hate to admit I'm wrong]. It makes rebooking an easier choice since I know I can have the points back for myself.
