If you book a reservation in your 11 month for your home resort and want to cancel and book a different resort at 7 month, do you have to cancel the home resort reservation first before reserving the 7 month resort? If so, what is the timeline between cancelling and being able to book the 7 month resort? Just trying to see how easy this is or if there could be a chance you get left with nothing when you do this.

When you cancel, the points are returned to your account immediately.

If you have enough points available, you can make the new reservation prior to canceling.

If you have enough points to book the new reservation without cancelling the original one you could book the new resort first and then cancel your home resort. If you need the points from the home resort reservation to pay for the new reservation, then you will have to cancel the existing reservation first to free up the points.

Once the original reservation is cancelled, the points go back into your account immediately. Then MS (or you if you are doing this online) can book a new reservation using those same points. In the past it did occasionally happen that during those seconds between cancelling and booking, the room the member wanted went to someone else AND the reservation they just gave up was snapped up as well, leaving them with nothing. I've read recent reports that MS is able to hold the room you want while they cancel your existing reservation and free up the points to pay for the new reservation. Since IT seems to tinker with the reservation system frequently, whether that feature will continue to work is anyone's guess.

You have to cancel the 11 month reservation to rebook at 7 months of doing it online,, if you call, they have a way of modifying the reservation so you don't lose. IMO, I'd you are concerned, I would do the phone call instead of the online option unless you have the points to book first without borrowing.
