What are good sites to look for hotels? Directly through the hotel, or through something like hotels.com or travelocity?

What about a condo rental such as homeaway? They would have a kitchen and often the accommodations are more comfortable.

The airport hotels in Philadelphia seem to be lower priced than some other areas from a fast look at the web. How safe or how close to the attractions I can't say. Many resorts include a breakfast; so, I'm not sure you really need a place with a kitchen. Many resort rooms will come with a microwave and small refrigerator. Some come with sofa beds, too. Maybe, consider being slightly out of the city and it may make a big difference in price.

If you have AAA or other discounts this will help get you a better deal. AAA is usually a 10% discount.

Extended Stay resorts have a kitchenette.

When I flew back from Vegas years ago, we stayed an additional 3 nights at a hotel at the airport. We would then take the hotel shuttle to the airport (just tip the driver to and from), hop on the train out front and take it to downtown Philly. We would get off at the gallery. You can then get buses or just walk, walk, walk :lmao:
Your paying then for the shuttle, bus and train, but the parking at the hotel airports are normally free (depending where you stay).
I believe they have a Homewood suites by the airport too, and they should have kitchenettes in them.

If they have a Homewood Suites by the airport, they supply breakfast every morning and Monday through Thursday beer, wine and dinner. They also have a kitchen, living area and bedroom.

You will be able to get your best deals by booking lodging in a vacation destination off season. Have you looked into the Jersey Shore? Look into Ocean City New Jersey. There are thousands of condo rentals super cheap off season (season is when kids are out of school in the summer).

It is only a 45 minute drive to Philly, 20 minutes to the wonderful Cape May and 10 minutes to Atlantic city.

Also look into rentals in Lancaster County (amish country). They are expensive in season but may be a bargain outside of summer. There is so much to do in the area (Hershey, PA, Longwood Gardens, Gettysburg, Valley Forge, etc).

I just used Airbnb for the first time and got a place during the busiest week of the year for $80/night.
