booking more nites than you need?

Since we are not sure yet what day we will fly out of Seattle, I wanted to overbook our nites (by 1 or 2) at the RPH and then cancel the nites we don't need. I just called to do this and was told that I would lose all my nites if I cancelled any? Does anybody have any experience with this? Our trip is planned for June 22 or June 23rd and I know that is a busy time so I do want to book our rooms now? Any suggestions?
