Only thing thats stops you doing it is their websites won't allow it, if you look at many US based airlines websites you have to have a US address to book, for UK travellers you have to go to the UK area of their site.
You can book thru companies like https://www.orbitz.com who have their site set up for EU travellers. You have to tick a box to say you are in EU (info here https://www.orbitz.com/shared/pagedef/content/legal/whyWeAskEU.jsp?popupsDisabled=false) I believe we have different data protection rules.
For August I have booked Virgin free flight out to MCO with miles but wanted to buy a one way flight home, did this thru Orbitz no problem and paid in $US. Its a BMI flight I paid $450 each. Same flights direct with BMI were £450 each. A massive difference.
