It has been a long time since I’ve booked a flight. Looking to go from NY to to Vancouver last 2 weeks in August family of 4. Flights have stayed the same price wise since I started looking 2 months ago and for basic economy seats it’s going to cost 4K. 🤯 should I book now or wait? Should I spend even more on the refundable ticket or buy the travel guard insurance united offers for 300$? Any advice would be appreciated.

It would certainly help to know how many of you there are, when you wish to fly, where you are willing to fly from and if you are open to a non-direct routing.

Flight prices have a tendency to fluctuate a lot, but at specific periods relative to the moment of the flight. That's why search engines are able to tell you if the current price is normal or too high, and if you can expect it to go down in the future.

Which airline(s) are you looking at?

I fly on Alaska airline all the time. They have a nonstop NYC to SEA. Then Alaska/Horizon( smaller plane) air SEA to YVR.
Good airline. One way is $482 today for August 4. Sounds like you are getting a normal fare.

If you’re flying with 4 then know that basic economy may end up with your party sitting all over the place since there are no advanced seat assignments. I would book regular. I may sound like a jerk when I say this but I am definitely that guy that is not going to give up my seat so you can sit together unless you happen to have a better seat than I do. I’m definitely not going to take anyone’s middle seat.

You might look at flying into Seattle and then using ground transfers (rental car, train, bus) to Vancouver. Some people on our June cruise are doing that.

Be wary of the train it looks like they’re discontinuing service.

It is true that Amtrak has not restarted their Cascades service across the border, but they are running their thru-way buses from Seattle to Vancouver.

I just know I saw several people on various threads who had the train booked for their spring and it was canceled and they weren’t informed. I’m in Canada so we’re popping on a quick flight from Calgary on Saturday.

That happened to people on our June cruise too, although I think they were all notified. In their press releases Amtrak was hopeful that train service would restart early in 2022 and it just hasn't happened yet. The bus is not as fun as the train, but it is an option.

Maybe try WestJet or Air Canada (Canadian airlines)

I’ve looked into Seattle with a rental car and dh was not thrilled about it plus it will take up our tour time in Vancouver

We caved and booked (very expensive) airfare yesterday but paid a bit extra to book it refundable. I am hopeful as the current crisis subsides air prices will go down, but it if doesn’t, at least I have some insurance against rising prices.

You were probably smart. I have stalked airfare for months for an upcoming date. I actually bought almost 6 months ago and fares were very cheap. I wanted to change the time of the flight recently and the prices skyrocketed, of course. HOWEVER, yesterday evening, they dropped drastically for my date. I was shocked. I was able to change the time and get a credit. This was JetBlue.

Just saying you should keep watching, but I do not think the economic crisis is going to end any time this year.

I like Google Flights for comparing prices, you can easily see if flying a day earlier can save you money etc. You can also filter with time for layover, numbber of stops etc. A very basic search there made it look like Air Canada and Westjet are cheaper than United.

We flew Cathay Pacific for our NY to YVR flight several years ago. I know things are so different now but then premium economy was under $600 roundtrip. Anything over 4 hours I need more room or I feel claustrophobic. In May we are flying an 11 hour direct JFK to HNL flight.

I suggest you look into Jet Blue's website.I have done their package deals which of you book airfair and a hotel you can snag a good deal. Also they NEVER charge if you need to reschedule your trip however you do not get a cash refund they give you a credit.
We are going to DisneyLand in May for the Star Wars event i got a great deal including the hotel.
This being before flights went up in price,I was suprised also just by shorening our trip by one nigh we have a 500.00 credit now.
