Booking breakfast if you are NOT staying at a D Hotel

Ok, so we're staying at the new Holiday Inn just a bit down the track, but I'd like to do the character breakfast too.
I've read that Cafe Mickey (2nd sitting @ 0930) or Inventions are the best, but how do you book in advance for them if you're not staying at a DLP hotel?

Cafe Mickey you can reserve when you are at DLP, at City Hall in the main park, or at the restaurant itself.

Inventions at the Disneyland Hotel you do not need to book at all, you just go to the restaurant and let them know you'd like to pay for breakfast. Its a fantastic way to start the day .

Inventions do a great breakfast but it's not a character meal where the characters come and visit you at your table. There are, however, usually one or two characters just outside the restaurant at breakfast time.
