Booking a room until day after departure

We did this on our last night prior to redeye. I wouldn’t recommend moving rooms if at all possible. I’ve had terrible luck at Aulani with rooms not ready till after 4:30. Much less stress on the check out date just to stay in your regular room till it’s time to go to the airport. Makes that last day more of a vacation day.

Forgot to mention that I’ve also booked spa and then a nice dinner. Last visit spa was still closed but getting a massage and then taking time to get ready at the spa and then have a nice dinner on check out day was a real treat. With just two adults spa cost and eating on the outside patio with live music and just having the bar menu was a pretty great way to end a vacation. But having the room till time for redeye flight actually was less stressful because no packing a day bag…and planning the day around leaving at x time.

We have been to Aulani more times that I can count (DVC owners there). We’ve always have the 3 kids, always check out of our 1 bedroom villa by 11am and have our routine (day at the pool/beach, shower in the lounge, kids go to Aunties while we go to Monkeypod, then head to the airport around 8pm for our 11pm flight).

We have a trip booked in November, and this time I booked the room through to the day after our departure as the lounge and Aunties are not available and given this is (hopefully!) our first trip in a year and a half we deserved to enjoy it.

Originally we were taking the kids, but as two of them are not yet eligible to be vaxed, it will just be me and DH if this trip happens. We can easily check out at 11am and find something to do with ourselves, but part of me thinks it would be way more awesome to just keep the room and cough up the points for the extra night so that we can totally relax on our last day and enjoy the view (we have a 1 bedroom ocean view villa booked). No desire to change rooms on the last day, so it is the one bedroom ocean view or nothing points wise.

Question for those on the Board: Do you ever book the extra night when you have a late departure from Aulani and, if so, is it really that much more awesome (do you enjoy your last day more)?

we considered doing it on a recent Vegas trip but we were able to make our schedule work and left the next late morning. So haven’t done it yet but YOLO go for it!

Thanks everyone! Since it’s just me and DH on this trip now, we were able to downsize to an ocean view studio (from the one bedroom). Much better use of points, and no guilt for staying the extra night! We even had enough points left over for him to send me in a surprise last minute trip BY MYSELF this coming weekend! So excited!

There would have to be a large excess of points for me to consider this strategy. Even then, I wouldn’t like wasting one night when we aren’t getting full value.
