Booking a Hotel using Airmiles

I asked this before but just have a couple more questions. I'm hopeful to book a trip later in the fall and I swear the site tracks what I am looking at because every time I go on the number of miles required keeps going up substantially. Starting to panic that I won't have anywhere enough if I wait to book (which is what I would prefer to do). I am only looking at hotels with a refund policy - my question is, how big of an issue is it to get miles put back if you cancel before the cancellation deadline? It's a large amount of miles and don't want a big fiasco if the border doesn't open and I have to cancel.

When I had to cancel a refundable hotel last year due to covid, when you logged on to look at your booking, there was a refund button I believe and in a few clicks it was done. Miles were back in my account within a few days.

I would def screenshot where it says refundable tho just to be safe
