I hoping to stock up on some books for my son to read over the summer. I'm planning on requesting them over at Paperback Swap . com. He is a second grader but has been tested as reading at the 7th grade level. I have a hard time finding books at his reading level that are appropriate for him.

He has already read the Gregor series, Wimpy Kid Series, Harry Potter series, and Percy Jackson series. Do you guys have any other suggestions???

TIA!
Beth:)

I had a similiar problem. DD (now 11) often reads a series multiple times because there's not a lot at her reading level that is close to age appropriate.
She did really love the Artemis Fowl series. (more than Happy Potter, gasp!)

DS loved the Redwall Series by Brian Jacques.

I have the same problem - and often go to the books of my childhood. Right now it's Dr. Dolittle, Black Beauty, Boxcar Children, Bobbsey Twins. (OK, so I have a girl). Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, Little House on the Prairie, and Pippi Longstocking are queued up as well. The Narnia books? Books 40+ years ago required much better reading skills, and the content was more appropriate to all ages.

Would your school's librarian be able to help?

What about Artemis Fowl? A Series of Misfortunate Events?

Deb

I knew the people on the Budget Board would have the answers!!! :goodvibes
Thank you all so much!

Summer of the Monkeys but I can't remember the author. Sweet and sentimental and funny, too!

The Mysterious Benedict Society series is good too. DS is similar & loves these books! I just bought some Artemis Fowl books but he hasn't tried those yet. I don't think the reading level is really high but he also really likes the 39 Clues series.

My girls (ages 11 and 10) are both strong readers and have read pretty much everything listed so far. Others they like:

Mister Monday by Garth Nix (7 book series - fantasy genre)
Maximum Ride series by James Patterson

If he liked the Percy Jackson books, Rick Riordan's first book of his new series is out
The Kane Chronicles, Book One: The Red Pyramid.

Our DS is on a the same level and finishing 2nd grade in a few weeks. He has enjoyed the Narnia series and also the Hardy Boys series (there are like 57 HB books). Narnia and and HB books are about 6th grade level. It's difficult trying to find something on his grade level, but also for his age. grrr. And, he loves to read and flies right thru a book.

My son also likes these:
Narnia series
Eragon Series
Young Wizard Series
Treasury of Illustrated classic - like Moby Dick, Huck Finn, Swiss Family Robinson, & Thousand leagues under the sea
The Deltora Series - Deltora Quest is the first one

and mainly went to the classics.. (but I have a DD)

Wizard of Oz series was a big hit
Dr. Doolittle, Mary Poppins, Secret Garden, Peter Pan, Wrinkle in Time, Cricket in Times Square...
We had one summer where we did a book/movie theme. She would read the book and then we would watch the film and compare. It was a lot of fun, and you'd be surprised how differnt some of them are.

My DS is enjoying the Charlie Bone series in 3rd grade now. He's not a very advanced reader, but they are large chapter books.

I would also do a lot of non-fiction. Biographies are always intersting.

I loved the Great Brain series at that age. Old books, but GREAT. Did you try Homer Price? Also, the author Gordon Korman wrote funny books for boys, but they might be too old for him right now. Have you tried Barbara Park's other books (she writes the Junie B series). Judy Blume, also wrote some great ones.

Does he have a library card yet? The librarians at your local library can make good suggestions, too.

I bought a lot of children's books over the years, new and at yard sales. Many were donated to a school when they were outgrown. We don't buy books now -- we use the library.

I also love the Great Brain! If he likes sports at all, I suggest Mike Lupica's books.

You guys rock!

Have you all checked out paperbackswap.com? It's a great way to trade out the books your child(ren) has "outgrown" for ones at their advanced reading level. I have been a member for almost 5 years and I love it!

Thanks again for all the book suggestions!

How about Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson's Peter Pan series - Peter and the Starcatchers, Peter and the Shadow Thieves, etc? Ridley Pearson also writes the Kingdom Keepers series - it isn't the greatest writing ever but they're fun.

My DS was way ahead in reading skills at that age too - he tested at 12th grade, 9th month by the time he was in 3rd or 4th grade. So this may be an ongoing challenge for you over the next few years. DS enjoyed the Narnia books, The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, and the Redwall series. As others have mentioned, some of the older classics may be the thing - maybe some Robert Louis Stevenson, Jack London, James Fenimore Cooper, and H.G. Wells? Another classic that comes to mind is Johnny Tremain. And quite a few of these have been made into movies so you could stretch things out by doing what a previous poster suggested - read the book, then watch the movie and do a comparison.
