My daughter is 7, heading into 3rd grade in the fall. Her reading level is rather high for her age. I need books that won't bore her yet books that aren't too old for her. Hard balance!

The Beverly Cleary books don't interest her for some reason.

Thanks

Has she read the Magic Tree House series yet? My kids started reading them in second grade, but read them for years afterward as new books came out. I think there are 41 or 42 books in the series by now.

I would also take a look at the Boxcar Children series and the Bailey School Kids books as possibilities. Of course, there is also the Little House in the Prairie series.

Good luck and have fun! :goodvibes

My rising 3rd grade girl loves The Series of Unfortunate Events. She can not read them fast enough. Good luck with your search.

My kids also enjoyed Magic Tree House but they are on the easy side. How about some Laura Ingall's stories or the American girl books.

My rising third grader reads at a 6th grade level. We have a hard time finding books that interest her but at the same time don't intimidate her with their size. Books she did make it all the way through:

The superfudge series by judy blume
The Charlie Bone books
The "Pet Trouble" books
She's reading Kingdom Keepers now
The Neverending Story
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nymh (I'm pretty sure I did not spell that right! :rotfl: )

Ella Enchanted. It is my favorite book of all time and I recommend to every little girl I know. It's not at all like the movie (which was horrible), it's much better.

Ditto Kingdom Keepers for us Disney addicts. I have a six year old who reads much higher than her grade level and we've been struggling with this for a couple years now. We actually got in a tug of war at the library over Kingdom Keepers. ;)

I'm starting her in the Babysitters Club this summer. The material is older but it's nothing bad. I think watching Hannah Montana is about equal.

I feel for you - it's a tough age because the older level books have older themes too. We have done some biographies too. It takes her longer to read those.

Hope that helps!

My 7 yo DD is also going into 3rd and she suggests books by Megan McDonald (The Sisters Club) and Paula Danziger (Amber Brown series).

The Warriors series -by Erin Hunter (I think) - they are immensely popular boys and girls alike - I can't keep them on my shelves.

Guardia's of Ga'Houle series - again, super popular series - this one I'd say is a bit more popular with boys than girls.

Dear Dumb Diary series - basically like Diary of a Wimpy kid, but for girls.

Harry Potter series - amazing!

Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder - Costo often has the whole set for cheap.

I'll keep thinking!

Some of my favorite books as a kid were The Secret Garden and The Little Princess by Frances Burnett. Also the Little House on the Prairie books.

My favorite book as a kid was Harriett the Spy. I also loved Tales of a 4th grade Nothing and SuperFudge.

My students love Sarah, Plain and Tall.

Roald Dahl books might be a good suggestion, with the exception of boy and going solo (his autobiographies, little too dry for 7 year olds)

bfg, georges marvellous medicine, matilda, all really great lots of memories reading these as a kid.

at 7 i used to read the just william stories as well, but they probably are more suited to boys.

My DD10 reads at 12+ level (highest they test to in elementary) and she just got the highest AR number/percentage ever in her entire school. :goodvibesShe did about 465% of her AR goal this year.

Some of her favorite series, when she was younger, have been: Harry Potter (started reading in 1st grade), Little House (this was in 3rd grade), Lemony Snickett (also in 3rd), Animorphs (hard to find-out of print), & Chronicles of Narnia. In 4th grade it was all about Percy Jackson which got her interested in Greek Mythology. She is currrently reading the Warriors Series (yes by Erin Hunter by actually 3 different writers, so my DD tells me) which she really enjoys since it's all about cats.

She's never been interested in books like The Babysitters Club, etc.

A year or two I gave her my old copy of "My Side of the Mountain" She liked it.

Good luck-finding new series of books for a voracious reader is not easy!;)

Thanks for all the suggestions!! I took her to the bookstore to look at some of these. Then, went to the library to check some out :) (budget board after all!)

She read all 41 Magic Tree House books (in order LOL) the end of 1st grade/early 2nd grade and loved them.

She wants to try the Warrior series (library is out) and she wants to read a couple of books by Bosch - I need to go see if they are OK for her - The Name of this Book is a Secret and This Book is Not Good For You (any thoughts?)

The library had none of the books she wanted in stock today but we ended up finding a copy of The 39 Clues. That should work for now.

Oh, she also liked The World According to Humphrey at the bookstore.

I'll add these to our library list and see what sticks. She wants something with ghosts - any suggestions? I tried Goosebumps but she nixed that.

Thanks!!!

The Sisters Grimm series by Michael Buckley is amazing. There's a website for them that gives more information and lists the books in order. The students at school can't put them down :)

It depends on her interest. My DD10 loves animals so the phantom stallion series was a hit and my son in 1st grade enjoyed Freckle Juice, which was very fun. But most important is to find her interest and then look for book in that area that will challenge but not frustrate.

Some of my favorite books as a kid were The Secret Garden and The Little Princess by Frances Burnett. Also the Little House on the Prairie books.

The two I bolded were going to be my suggestion!

Try these authors for some ghost books that are about the early 5th grade level:
DeFelice, Cynthia
Hahn, Mary Downing.
Wright, Betty Ren.

I have not read books by them, but they might be a good place to start.

DS 8 also rising 3d grader and advanced reader and loves mystery and adventure. He's tearing through the 39 clues books while we wait for bk 2 of Percy Jackson @ library. These are what got him over the hump of longer books with no pictures.

Loved all the Superfudge books. Loves Roald Dahl. He likes the clever funny too.

We're also reading Half-Magic suggested by librarian. Old fashioned magic story. Also suggested by Librarian-Mr. Popper's penguins.

I'll ask my daughter in the morning for the title of the ghost book she read last summer. I know the name Helen was in the title...big help, huh! She loved it and had me read it...I think the author was the Mary name above.

Wait Till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn. Good book, but might be a bit scary for a 7-year-old. I didn't read it until I was a little older, maybe 5th or 6th grade, and found it really creepy.

If she likes the American Girl books at all, try the American Girl Mysteries, or History Mysteries (not about the AG characters, but put out by the same company). They're a little higher reading level than the regular AG books.
