I just had to purchase 2 book socks for my son's class. They are fabric book covers. They cost 3.59 each. I know it isn't a ton of money, but I really think it is unnecessary. When I was kid, we took our books home the first week of school and covered them with brown paper shopping bags. With everyone being eco-friendly, and with good reason, I just think it would be better to teach the kids to reuse household items rather than purchasing new ones.

Does anyone out there still cover books with brown paper bags???

My DS (grade 6 - 1st year of middle school) was not allowed to use book sox. The school sent a note saying that the book sox can tear the book covers. We were told to use paper bags. Thank goodness I remembered how to cover books from my school days! My son loves the paper covers because he can doodle on them!

I just bought some on Monday at Target for $0.40 each! They were in the marked down school supplies section. (soon to change to Halloween) School here has been open since Aug. 19 (Aug. 3 for year round) so that may make a difference. These were the larger size. The smaller ones were even cheaper. I bought 4 to put away for next year!

I purchased the first set at walmart for 1 dollar...they stated up to 8 1/2 X 11. The teacher sent them home yesterday (it was the first day of school) stating they needed to be jumbo. I went back and bought "jumbo" and they state "fits books larger than 10 x 8! The kids have off thursday and friday so maybe I'll run over to target and check there supply!!! Thanks!

Love them! I've had kids in school going on 8 years now, and they really work well. In fact, I get several years of use out of them, and probably have more than I actually need. Jumbo ones typically fit most textbooks.

When I was in school, we had paper covers they would hand out to everyone.

I just paid $4.99ea for 2 of them and my DD still needs 3 more. I was flipping, I told the cashier if I find them on sale some where I am taking them back. I think that's way to much. Last yr I paid .69 cents for them and this year I couldn't find them on sale.:confused3. I also just spent $4.99ea on binders.:confused3 It all adds up when you have to get a lot.

Were they a fundraiser for your school?
Our school sells them but if the parents don't want to buy those they can buy them anywhere. I usually pick up a couple at Target when I see the sale and then what he doesn't use gets thrown into the closet as replacements. I suppose they'd let you just cover with a paper bag too if you wanted although I can't remember seeing any kid doing that. No page tearing that I know of - it's a Private School and we're responsible for damaged textbooks so I'm glad the books are protected.

My hs son has had most of his book sox for years .... like he is a Junior in High School now and I think we bought a couple of those back in the 5th grade.

We still use brown paper bags. Even if I have to pay for them, they are only about 6 cents each. I was tired of paying $$ for book covers that rip.

We were also told not to use them. To use paperbags. When I run out of paperbags we use left over heavy duty x-mass wrapping paper turned inside out. :thumbsup2

Our Target also had a wide selection on clearance. Also, Dollar Tree had them, but Target's were cheaper on clearance.

This is all new to me. I never covered a book when I was in school and we don't cover the kids books with anything either... :confused3

I used book socks for a few years but then the books the kids were bringing home were so big, even the big book socks didn't cover the whole thing. Now we just use the paper bags and the kids actually like it better because they can draw and color on them all they want.

DD is in HS this year and they said no book socks as it breaks the backs of the books. One of her teachers taught them to cover a book with brown paper bag with just folds and it's held up well so far.

we use book sox here because that's what the teachers requested. I just bought 7 of them for DD13 yesterday and last week bought DS9 6 of them. they were $3.99 each. wow, I just figured it out, that's $54 in book covers:scared1:.

We found a few on clearance. I won't pay more than .49 for one - Trader Joe's will give you paper grocery sacks for free and you can make covers from them.

The kids here are not allowed to use the socks, either. Thankfully I have plenty of paper bags. They want them covered because the books are fairly new, and at $75 a pop, the teachers are hoping they last a little longer.

Neither my middle schooler nor my high schooler are allowed to use book socks - it's the good old paper sack. I bought a TON of book socks several years back for @ 10 cents each and can't use them. I was so excited for my bargain and they popped my bubble!!!:sad2:

My kids don't have to cover their books. They bring their text books home and leave them here for the year so I guess their is less wear and tear:confused3. When I was kid I used the paper bags or the paper ones they gave us in school.

I bought mine at Staples, that was the only place I was able to find them and to fit her books. Our Target never had them this year and AC Moore are to small.:confused3

I have no clue what she did with the ones from last year. She better save these ones though.:)
