We seemed to have cracked the upgrade mystery case at DCL.(at least, for us) All you late bookers out there - take heart!!

We've only cruised 3 times now and each time have gotten upgraded. This is what we do:
Get great rate tips from mousesavers.com
Cruise off season
Book within 60 days
Book Cat 11(seems to be most popular)
Book just the 2 of us

We receive GTY status and then an upgrade about a week later. It seems to work for us!

The best room we've had is Wonder #6500, a corner room, forward(we love forward) huge bathroom, steamer trunk, much bigger room beacuse I guess it was a handicapped room. We also got an SPH room last time, but we didn't like it nearly as well.

We're thrilled with the upgrades and can't wait for our Febr cruise!!

Thanks for the info! Now, I'm just trying to find out when "value season" is!

Who do you usually book through?

Disneyfan551, we booked our first cruise through a travel agent and then did it ourselves the last 2. We really enjoy the process and anticipation of doing it ourselves, plus we can see the reservation online.

GTY status means you book a certain category, rather than a certain stateroom #, and you're guaranteed that you'll get a room of AT LEAST that category, or better - so if you book a cat. 11 GTY, you'll get at LEAST a cat. 11 stateroom.

We werent' able to do that booking 2 months out, they were all gone. :(

I'd agree with this theory, based on my one experience with DCL. I booked a 7-day Eastern 3 weeks before sailing. We purchased a category 11 GTY and got an obstructed balcony.

Same here. Booked a month out, just the 2 of us, cat 11. Got room 6000, a handicap cat 8 room. Large and very quiet.

I did have a room assignment but suspect it was given to someone with more than 2. The handicap room could only comfortably sleep 2, in my opinion. (There was no sofa or drop down bunk.)

I must be different, I booked a category 10 cabin in February for the December 27 cruise. Got upgraded the week before to a category 5 cabin.

for Sept cruise, upgraded to 4 category 7's.
