Do you (or anyone else) know of people who had already booked and still got sent PINs? I know it seems silly, but I don't want to mess up my chances of getting some great discount!
Getting a postcard or pin is so random I personally wouldn't count on getting one! I certainly wouldn't wait in hopes of getting one. I did get a postcard a few years ago, however, it was not applicable to what I was going to book, therefore, I didn't use it. I seriously doubt if "when" you book has anything to do with getting a postcard or pin. Again, regardless of wether you are booked or not, IF you should happen to get a postcard or pin you can apply it, IF it applies.
Since we really want Poly though, I will probably do what you suggest and book a room only now (which can be cancelled at any time, right?), then when package rates come out, book that.
Yes, you can cancel at any point without penalty up till the 45 day point when booking a package. After that, you will have to pay a fee to cancel. However, if you book a room only now - you do not have to "cancel" it in order to have it changed to a package. That is main reason to go ahead and book, to ensure you have the room. Once the 2008 rates are released, just call back and have it changed to a package - you will keep the same reservation #.
Then if a CODE comes out, apply it.
YES, IF a code comes out at any point that applies to what you have booked (or plan to book,) then you can call have it applied to your existing reservation.
Am I right that when you book a package (versus room-only) you have to put a down payment and you lose that if you cancel, right?
No, from my understanding, when you book - regardless of room only or package you will have to put down a deposit, generally it's $200. With a package it must be paid in full by the 45 day point.
If you cancel the reservation before the 45 day point on a package (do not know about a room only's terms) -then NO you would not lose any money - it would all be refunded, however,again, after the 45 day point there is a penalty. A room only reservation ( I believe) still would require the down payment, but the remainder of the balance would be due upon check - out.
But, if a code comes out, you would just have to pay less on the remainder?
It will depend on what the code is. For example, the last 2 years the discount on packages has been the free upgrade to park hoppers, waterparks and more, with a very slight room rate reduction. Now, we purchased the park hoppers, so we got that amount refunded, and since there was the room reduction, and I had already paid off my balance, I was refunded that difference as well. It basically just depends on what the discount is - and what you've booked.
Do I have this all right? It was easier when I didn't have any clue about all this planning!!!

Sorry, one more question, if I book a room-only now, make some ADRs at the 180 day mark, then cancel the room-only and book a package, do I lose my ADRs?

No, again, you do not have to cancel your room only, you just need to call and change your reservation. The reservation # will stay the same. Your ADR's will not be affected unless you change them or cancel them. Also, just an FYI your 180 day mark is Aug. 6th!! Same as me!!
