Book ideas for DS-14yrs old

My DH's nephew really liked the Alex Rider series.

If he likes Narnia, he might like The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper. It has adventure and magic, but ties in Arthurian legend.

I don't know about the reading level of those- but they were enjoyed greatly!

What about classics, like the 3 musketeers?

Cinda Williams Chima has written two series that my DS14 (almost 15) and DS 12 both loved. (They are all listed as Young Adult, though)

First is The Heir Chronicles (trilogy): The Warrior Heir, The Wizard Heir, and the Dragon Heir

Secondly Seven Realms trilogy: The Demon King, The Exiled Queen, and The Gray Wolf Throne.

My older DS just went for a 3rd read of the Heair Chronicles, so they must be good. Only other thing he's ever re-read is Harry Potter.

I'll also agree with other people on Hunger Games and Alex Rider. My kids never got into Redwall. Not their thing.

My son, almost 12, loved the Hunger Games series!

Also suggest...
James Patterson, Maximum Ride series
James Dashner, Maze Runner triology
Rick Riordan, The Kane Chronicles
Gary Paulsen, Hatchet & others that follow

He is getting the Kingdom Keepers series for Christmas.

Garth Nix's Keys to the Kingdom series (nothing to do with Disney). MUST read in order -- first one is Mr. Monday -- about at 13 or 14 year old boy who is sucked into a fantasy world and has lots of adventures that could result in the destruction of the world. DS16 and I have both read all 7, and they're excellent (we started three or four years ago).

Oldie but goodie -- A Wrinkle in Time. The Chronicles of Narnia series. The City of Ember series (although I only really liked that one, thought the sequels -- and the prequel -- weren't of the same quality).

The Anthony Horowitz and James Patterson books mentioned are constantly checked out by boys in my library. Also very popular is the Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flanagan - always flying off the shelves. There's a new series that seems to be doing well too about young Sherlock Holmes. The first book is called Storm Cloud.

My DS 13 enjoys almost any of the "young adult" books by James Patterson.

Maximum Ride and Daniel X are his favorite series.

I was going to say Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flanagan also. I just finished the 10th myself. Can't wait till the next one!

Eragon
The Maze Runner
Lord of the Rings Trilogy and The Hobbit
Trapped by Michael Northrop
The Knife of Never Letting Go (first in trilogy by Patrick Ness)

Wow, great suggestions!

He has read the Percy Jackson series and thoroughly enjoyed them.

I think I am going to get him the Hunger Games and the Heir Chronicles.

My 13 yo DS likes the John Grisham young adult books. There are two - Theodore Boone, Kid Lawyer and Theodore Boone, The Abduction.

Another book my DS just read is The Winter War. It is about young skiiers in WWII who skiied through the alps to get messages to the soldiers.

I LOVE Chsitopher Paloni's Eragon series and second its recommendation.

Rick Riordan is another fav in our house, but it is written for a younger audience and did not appeal to my older son when it first came out because he found it "beneath" him. Don't forget, Rick continues to write YA -- There are 3 series -- Original Percy Jackson, Egyptian series beginning with the Red Pyramid (2 books to date) and the combo Greek/Roman series (2 books to date)

I love the Heir Chronicles as well.

When my son was 14, he LOVED the Zombie Survival Guide. Not a novel, but it cracked him up. Ditto for John Stewart's EARTH. These books took over the slot of Ripley's and Guinness World Records in our house.

idk if anyone suggested it ( too lazy to read all three pages ) but we all love The Ranger's Apprentice books. Just enough action, humor, and a smidge of romance. My 15 year old son on up to my 20 yr old daughter ( and myself) all love the series. ( also the Hunger Games )

Two thoughts. One mainstream, the other a little less-so.

For fans of wizards and dragons, the Dragonlance trilogy. I read it in MS/HS and still have the paperbacks on my shelf.

The GFL series by Scott Sigler. The Rookie, The Starter, and The All Pro. Be aware, Sigler also writes some fairly adult horror stories. THAT SAID, the GFL universe is a YA series he writes about an alien football league 500 years in the future. Think Star Wars meets Any Given Sunday.

Okay, first, I agree with the above. And here's some more young adult I didn't see mentioned:

The Temeraire Series (the first is called His Majesty's Dragon in America)
The Golden Compass Series
The Bartimaeus Trilogy
The Crystal Cave

Now, that being said, OP's son is 14. To me, that's not young adult. I mean, age wise it is, but I was reading very adult oriented books by that time. Some of the books mentioned in previous posts skirt this issue, but I thought I'd add some fantasy options that are not so "kiddish".

A Song of Ice and Fire (first book is Game of Thrones...you may have heard of the HBO series)
The Wheel of Time Series
The Harry Dresden novels
Anything by Jacqueline Carey (although these can get pretty "adult")
Anything by Neil Gaiman

The Peter and the Starcatcher series is also a good choice for this age. It was a bit dense for my 11 year old, so it should be perfect for 14! There are 3 or 4 in the series and they just came out with the first book in an adjacent series.

Also check out The Mysterious Benedict Society and it's 2 sequels. Very cool.

Lastly, I'd try Chasing Vermeer (it has 2 sequels!). A fun, unusual mystery about middle schoolers in Chicago.

Chris Crutcher has a number of novels with teen males as the protagonist. I used to assign them for book reviews back when I taught 9th/10th grade English.

My ds (13) loves the Hunger Games as well. He also loved the Vladimir Tod Chronicles and she has another series starting called First Kill (Heather Brewer.) Charlie Higson has a series of books too a few of the books are called The Enemy, The Dead, and The Fear.

My son is an avid reader but fantasy is not his favorite. He liked the Missing series a lot by Margaret Peterson Haddix. The first book is called "Found".
