apparenty i filled a form in wrong in 2010 that led to some overpayment in housing benefit i was recieving at the time they have estimated i owe them about £3000 still waiting for a final bill

im gutted but also wary as to the figures they have used so got an apointment at citizens advice and an accountant to go over my self employed accounts again hopefully it will all be a huge mistake

if not though will be a huge set back prob 2015 til we get to take our dream trip im gutted

Oh no that's terrible - hope your accountant can sort something out.

If you do have to pay it back you shouldn't have to pay it all back at once so request the smallest amount possible to pay back each month and then hopefully you can continue to save for your dream holiday

Good luck!

haha my thoughts exactly , the boyfriends answer is to hand over all our existing florida fund and pay the overpayment in one go and then start again saving !!! NO WAY I CAN DO THAT IT WOULD ACTUALLY BREAK mY HEART TO HAND THAT HARD SAVED FLORIDA FUND OVER !!

i would never hand over my savings!!! i had a tax credit over payment from when i was married ( over 7 yrs ago) it was their mistake but they have asked for me to pay it back so for the last yr i have paid it back at £10 a month, not a chance i would give my holiday savings over....... i understand that they made my mistake and your saying you filled the form out wrong but i would not fret too much just offer to pay a small amount every month :)

We have had over payment of a few thousand and paid a certain amount over 2 years no interest either don't give them all your money

Same here!

It wasn't the same situation admittedly, but when I lost my job a few years before coming to university, I had to switch from Income Support to Job Seekers Allowance.

I was advised by the Job Centre at the time that as I was on the same tarif of benefit, but housing benefit would remain without me having to reapply - it took them almost a year to inform me that they had in fact stopped my housing benefit and my rent hadn't been paid at all for that entire period!

I paid them back over about three years! They didn't once ask about my savings.

xx

A couple of years ago we realised we would no longer be entitled to tax credits so i did not bother to re- new our claim. ( we only got the standard £40 odd a month anyway)

Just before we went away last October I had a letter saying we owed all the money we had been paid in 2008-09. After several calls I was told that basically because I did not renew I had effectively not confirmed my income for that tax year - so even though we were entitled to the money my mistake in not sending a form back has meant we are now paying back £40 a month (due to an alteration in my tax code). Makes me laugh that they can go back 3 years to claim something back that I was entitled to and we have the evidence to support this but because I did not return a renewal form (knowing i was no longer entitled ) I now have to pay back my previous years payments which were allowed. Good luck and I hope you sort it out.

well account has said i filled them in right !!

im now appealing as the housing want to use my gross profit without any expenses taken off ( im self employed) thats why there figures were different to mine !!

still topping up the holiday fund so looks like still be on for next year "!
