Boo! Hiss! Siblings free for the taking! (was "Can't win" :D)

I'm the only one of six "well-aged" siblings without a college degree. Several of us went out to eat yesterday, and I mentioned I'd just started a certificate program at the local community college for accounting - and that I'm going to complete a two-semester program in four months. Do you think any of them encouraged me, or had anything positive to say? Nope. "Why don't you go for a degree?"

Fortunately, my sister's very sensible boyfriend was with us, and he, at least, merely said, "Good for you!".

I'm giving away some brothers and sisters. Any takers?

Good for you! Congratulations. (I was actually considering going back to do a very similar accounting-designation course, 1 year. I figure, I've been doing the work for years, why not get the paper that proves I know what I'm talking about?)

I think your siblings are beyond the time for being given away...I've lurked on your threads about their reactions, and it really seems that they are clearly telling you who they are and that they would like to be dropped by you now.

I say good for you too! Sometimes siblings are clueless and the harshest on us, just remember we don't get to pick our siblings, but we do pick our friends and I bet your friends are proud of what you are doing.

You should change your title. You are winning, just not their way. The situation you are in with your siblings reminds me of, Alice in Wonderland with the Queen, "Always your way.". IMO, that's kind of how your siblings treat you from what I've read. They want you to do things their way. Maybe they don't mean it as harsh as it sounds. Maybe they want things for you that worked for them. I don't know. But it does snap and sting like a rubber band doesn't it?

Don't let them get you down.

Do it! I'm fifty-four. I remember a letter in Dear Abby years ago: "but if I go back to school now, I'll be 36 by the time I graduate in four years!" Her response? "How old will you be in four years if you don't go back to school?"

I will trade you a know it all sister who has a perfect marriage and a perfect child. So I have been divorced and I can "no longer pick my own men" that doesn't mean her life is perfect.
I have decided that I have to live my life and she has to live hers. Let it roll over you. You are the important one, not them.

congratulations! i know your pain, op i graduated from a business college (after 2 years at university) with a legal secretarial degree, because i wanted to be in the law business but couldn't afford law school. my brother went to a university for 3 years, but never graduated. however, he takes great pride in reminding me that i don't know how hard he had it being away from home that 3 years, because i didn't go to a "real college". maybe my brother and your sibs need to hang out!

Now I know where my mom got her comment

Took me years to finish my education while working full time. Got to a point where I wondered if it was worth doing when I was in the middle of Grad school and 50+ hr wor weeks

Mom's comment was nearly the same as Dear Abby's. Now I have something no one will be able to take away

I say education is an investment in yourself no matter what age! Good luck to you and your studies

If I've learned nothing else in life, I've learned that family members are not always "tactful" when it comes to their remarks.. Don't let it bother you..
