Some will see this as an attempt to justify or excuse comments that are simply inexcusable. I can assure you it is not. I suppose the politically safe thing would be to move on from this episode and just hope that it fades into the woodwork. We can dismiss Reverend Wright as a crank or a demagogue, just as some have dismissed Geraldine Ferraro, in the aftermath of her recent statements, as harboring some deep-seated racial bias.

But race is an issue that I believe this nation cannot afford to ignore right now. We would be making the same mistake that Reverend Wright made in his offending sermons about America – to simplify and stereotype and amplify the negative to the point that it distorts reality.

I thought he made some really good points about how anger exists in all communities, the issues driving that anger may be different-but the anger is still there. Instead of us all being angry in our own communities, he's trying to say-let's get together and do something about it. No community alone can do it, it will take us all working together. I do believe that he's right about that.

Well, if one is frequently accused of racism, one might want to take some time and ponder the words and actions that seem to cause problems. Just a suggestion. A side benefit-might find life more peaceful.

No kidding! -- this is the most Reagan-esque speech I've seen in the campaign to date. I'll be interested to see how this goes down with the pundits today -- and how it plays out in the polls.

I wish all this wasn't taking away coverage of McCain's visit to Iraq.

I have. And I can't find any reason to be labeled one. And this is mostly a general "accusation", not necessarily on an individual basis.

No I also got out of it that he refuses to distance himself completely from the pastor and compares it to not being able to disown his own grandmother (as if the two are even remotely similar). That is all I needed to hear. And did he really need to drag his grandmother's name through the mud?

Oh and if it doesn't bother you that Obama just lied to all of his supporters about hearing the offensive statements, then I guess you have been drinking the Koolaid.
