Which restaurant at AKL should we dine in? It will be my parents (both 63, real meat and potatoes kinda folks), myself and DH (both 33, LOVE exotic food, will try anything) and DD (3, also loves to try new foods)? I like the idea of a buffet like Boma, but the menu at Jiko looks FABULOUS!! What do you think? Which one would have more things my parents might would like? Thanks in advance.

Hard to say--probably something on the menu at each that would appeal to them. But I always prefer table service to a buffet and for that reason alone Jiko gets the nod. Plus--it's an excellent restaurant!!

I've been to both (with a 4 year old) and we both prefer Boma. Jiko was okay, but not as great as what I expected. There are just so many interesting things to try at Boma. I like to sample a little bit of everything. I think your parents will be okay since there is a meat carving station and some traditional foods at Boma. The soups are great and so are the desserts.

Boma has prime rib every night. They also have potatoes...not mashed, but baked with seasoning on them. They are one of my favorites. We love Boma.

Boma sounds perfect. I think they will love the carving station and potatoes. If it were just DH and I, we would go to Jiko, but with the parents involved, I believe the buffet will be our choice. Thanks!!!!

my vote is for boma's. we've tried both, and like the variety of boma's. although i like the pace of a sit-down (non-buffet) like jiko, we didn't like the flavor of one of the entrees we ordered. it's not that it was bad, it was well prepared, but we didn't like the flavor. with boma's, at least there are plenty of options in case we didn't care for a certain flavor, and i liked being able to try it all. we do other table service meals, so the buffet was a nice change. great atmoshere in there, too. enjoy!

send the parents and the dd to Boma--or better yet, someplace else entirely, and go to Jiko with your DH for a wonderful exotic meal. :goodvibes

We love both restaurants. Be aware that if your meat and potatoes relations don't like "exotic" food , some "plain food" kinds of folks object to having to find their "normal" food among all the "african food" offerings. (That's a direct quote from a non-adventurous friend).

The advantage to Jiko would be they could get an excellent steak and sub in a pototo w/out having to pick from the hundred other offerings. But if your DD is "active" then Jiko might be a difficult fine dining "sit" for her.

I agree with everyone who is recommending Boma's. My husband and I don't normally like buffet's either, but this was really good. Boma's also has more of a family type atmosphere than Jiko's, We thought the servers were more relaxed and better with children at Boma's as well.

DW and I loved Jiko, but I don't think it would work as well with a big family group. Your parents and DD will have more choices at Boma.
