We will be there in November and this will be my parents first trip.

I checked out the menus for both restaurants, but I thought I'd get some opinions...

3 adults and DD8 on the dining plan - which restaurant do you think - Boma or Jiko? We are staying at AKL and are going to one of the two restaurants on our first night.

This is a tough one based on you using the DDP. I have eaten at both. I am not a huge buffet fan, so I preferred Jiko, but this is such a subjective issue. The food was excellent at Jiko. BUT, Jiko takes 2 Table Service credits, not 1 like Boma. So it's definitely a more costly option. Another thing about Boma, apparently curry is used alot in African food . . . I could even smell it upon entering the restaurant. A little curry goes a long way for me. ;)

You could always go to Jiko your first night and go to Boma for breakfast the next morning and pay OOP. :goodvibes That way you will have experienced them both, albeit the Boma breakfast is alot more traditional.

Since your parents have never been, I would do Boma. Much more likely for them to find something they like there. Boma always does great soups and have a carvery station that appeals to everyone (spicy and non-spicy lovers). I detest all spicy food (especially curry), but I love Boma. The exquisite dessert buffet is also all non-spicy! It is the best dessert buffet at WDW!

Jiko will also use up 2 TS credits.

Frankly, I would go to both during your trip, especially if you are staying at AKL, it will be very convenient. Also, I don't think that having breakfast at Boma's qualifies as a "Boma" experience, since the majority of the food is the same as other WDW breakfast buffets.

THANKS! :thumbsup2

I was trying to find on the WDW website if Jiko was two table service credits, but I couldn't find it.

I also got a little worried about the curry comment - I HATE CURRY. But hopefully they will have enough that doesn't involve curry on the buffet at Boma.

I think we'll do Boma the night we check in and then maybe I'll treat my parents to Jiko on our last night. ;)

Thanks for the posts!!

Don't worry about a thing, I hate curry and I love Boma...

I don't think they use curry in hardly anything there...

Certainly some exotic spices here and there, but. believe me, you will LOVE Boma!!

Plenty of offerings for all types of palates...

We love both but in your situation I would do Boma.
You will love it!!!!! don't worry about the curry. My DH does not like it and he LOVES Boma!!!!

When I was there several years ago, they used curry in alot of things at Boma. My friend and I did the the culinary tour and they also mentioned it in that tour. Maybe they backed off using it . . . but I promise they were using it then. :confused3

Edited: Okay . . . now I'm sure I'm just being defensive, BUT, I just googled Boma and Curry and several people talk about the curry dishes they have, i.e. Coconut Curry Soup, Coconut Curry Seafood, Butternut Squash soup has curry in it, Curry Cucumber salad, etc., etc., etc. In fact, many of those items are still listed on the allearsnet menu and I distinctly remember smelling it when I walked into the restaurant.

I saw that on the allears menu too - that's why I was asking. My mom and I don't like curry at all, but I guess if we are using a table credit from the dining plan we will just go for it.

Hey - how did you like the culinary tour? I was thinking about going on it with my parents - they are really into cooking - love Top Chef, Hell's Kitchen, etc. I thought it would be fun and something other than the parks.

My friend and I enjoyed it. It started in front of Jiko. An African Guide met us there and then introduced us to the Jiko chef (probably a student Chef, not main one) who talked a little bit about different African flavors and aromas. Then the Guide took us over to Boma and a Chef there showed us how they make Butternut Squash soup and gave each of us a sample and he discussed some of the different food pods. It was only about a 20-30 minute tour. It was very low key, not real indepth but it was definitely a pleasurable way to spend some time away from the park. I highly recommend it. In fact, this same friend and I will be staying at AKV in December and I wouldn't mind taking the same tour just to chill and relax. I may even try Boma again (just avoiding those curry dishes). ;)

Well African foods are a lot of curries. (I had the pleasure of eating Ostrich curry while over there)

Not all curries are spicy.

However, both Boma & Jiko's are highly americanized versions of the dishes over there so you'll be happy at both. Personally, I prefer Jiko's to Boma though.

My sister (64) and I (57) LOVE Boma's.....(I don't like curry either..but...we think everything is great at Boma's)....In fact...just the two of us are going to Disney in October and she made reservations at Boma's for us...On the other hand...when I have taken the rest of my family...(husband, sons, daughters in law, grandchildren)...Well..they didn't care for it......:confused3 .....You know something....THAT'S OK...because my sister and I will be able to eat at a place we love...without all the distractions! :cool1:

We have eaten twice at Jiko.....the food was fantastic...but, we both prefer to have more of the variety at Boma's....

Another vote for Boma. We went two years ago with my picky DS (13) and he loved it! Also with us, was our cousin and her granddaughter (10). She enjoyed the variety of food and had no trouble finding a number of items she liked. We plan on making a stop there during next year's trip. As far as curry :crazy2: , I'm not a big fan either, and I thought the food was great.

Yep - we'd vote for Boma too - it's a much more relaxed, informal affair with (as someone earlier said) more americanised food (the steak is wonderful...). Jiko is very classy so I guess it depends what you want from your experience - I suspect you won't be disappointed with either :thumbsup2

On the DDP Boma's, don't think resturants are worth 2 credits.

I vote for Jiko's. It is a family favorite. My family didn't care for Boma. I could taste curry in everything.
