Bobby had to get stitches in his lip

It seems that yesterday while Thom, his g/f and the kids were visiting his g/f's parents Bobby cornered his g/f's old dog (who now lives with her parents) and it bit Bobby badly enough for him to need stitches. I was furious at first but I've finally gotten to the point that I just want the dog kept away from Bobby.

Did they make sure that the dog had all its shots? I would be more afraid of that the stitches.

J.C. has had his share of stitches at 11 years old...LOL. Just make sure that dog is up to date on its shots!

I did make sure about the shots. I just don't want Bobby to have a scar or anything. I'm also mad that they let the dog near him when it's like that.

how many stitches did he get? I had 22 in my lip from a softball that I "caught" with my mouth...lol.......It went through my upper and lower lip and I only have a tiny scar....you wouldn't even notice it if I didn't show you.

Is this the parents that your ex and the kids are going to be moving in with? That would definitely worry me. I always feel like once a dog bites, you need to be very careful. (there are a few exceptions where a dog was provoked)

Let me ask you this, I'm still more worried about the fact that a dog bit him.

When anyone is bitten by a dog doesn't the dog have to be impounded and tested to prove that the dog doesn't have rabies? If I'm not mistaken I think this is a law!

Please don't just take Thom's word or even his GF's parent's word for it that the dog has had its shots. I would have the dog tested and make 100 percent sure!!!!

I'm not sure about that, Beauty. I will admit (and I'm a dog lover, so this isn't normal for me) that my first reaction was that I wanted the dog put to sleep. It was just my instant anger, but I will check on the impound thing.

I would check. It is just better to be safe than sorry and even though the rabies shot won't be fun for Bobby it is still much much better to be sure. Rabies can be very very critical if not deadly to children that age! If the dog has had its shots and everything if fine then they won't hurt the dog. Believe me I am an animal lover too...you know that But when it comes to my child thats when I draw the line.

Maybe just call the doctor who put the stitches in for Bobby and ask about it. Ask what you should do and what are the risks for rabies....and then take it from there!

I was bit pretty bad by a friend's family dog. I had over 60 stitches in my face, and mouth area. Must say it was a horrible experience and has taken me a long time to feel comfortable around a lot of dogs. I love dogs and still have one and always will. Any way in the face you will always have more stitches, the closer they stitch the less scaring in the future.
Also as for quarientining the dog that varies from state to state. When I was bit, about 18 years ago the dog had to be seen right away by a vet then house and leash quarentined. The doctor who did the stitching was required by law to report the bit.
I also agree once a dog bits it can't be trusted. I know there could be reason but to me I wouldn't chance it. I was 22 when bit I can't even imagine as a child

It doesn't sound as if the dog was at fault.

I'm sure that both child and parent are upset that this happened but you should be upset with the adults that were not providing proper supervision, not the cornered, old dog .

You also need to take this opportunity to education your son about more appropriate ways to interact with animals.

Glad he wasn't more seriously hurt!

In Richmond the law is that if a hospital or any other medical center treats anyone for a dog bite of any kind they are required to notify animal control. Animal control will then come out to see the dog and check on it's vet records. The dog will remain "homebound" for a specified period of time.

My cat recently bit my wrist pretty bad. I had to go for a tetnaus (sp) shot. Even though it was a cat bite, it had to be reported to animal control. They called me about it, and checked with my vet on the cat's shots. He also had to be kept in for 2 weeks, and not have any contact with kids. They consider any animal bite serious up here because of rabies.

Gepetto, read the second sentence of what you quoted. Thom's being kicked out this weekend. They'll be coming to live with me and Roger this weekend.

I would watch the stitches closely. It is not always a good idea to stitch up dog bite wounds because of the chance of infection.
