Just a quick weekend trip to WDW for the Pirate & Princess Party pirate: princess: last Saturday. We arrived Friday night at POR, and after finding 2 hr waits at most restaurants in DTD, we decided to just head back to the resort and try Boatwright's. After all, it's a Disney table service restaurant, and we've never really had a "bad" meal at Disney before, so what could go wrong? :confused3

The menu looked promising and there was only a 10 minute wait so we stepped into the River Roost lounge and ordered a couple of drinks. :drinking1 Once seated, I ordered the Spinach Salad - Made with grape tomatoes, bacon-herb vinaigrette, roasted beets, mushrooms, and goat cheese. - $5.99, followed by the Grilled Pork Chop - Served with maque choux and apple butter. - $20.99. First of all, the salad was HUGE!!! Nothing exciting to report, but the entrée came before I was even ½ done with the salad. That always irks me for some reason. I’ve been avoiding this part because I can honestly say that the pork chop was horrendous! It was dry, overcooked, and tasted like they completely forgot the seasoning!!! The maque choux was tasty, but that was it. I couldn’t even eat ½ of my meal. DH ordered the Romaine Salad - Made with baby romaine, croutons, asiago cheese, and prosciutto served with our House dressing. - $6.49 and the Slow-roasted Prime Rib - Served with three cheese hash brown potatoes and cabernet sauce. - $21.99. Again, the salad was huge. He ordered his prime rib medium rare, but it came out only slightly pink, probably closer to medium well. We’re not the type to send our food back, be we probably should have during this meal. In fact, we both nibbled off DD’s plate of Beef & Macaroni - Made with marinara sauce and topped with mozzarella served with veggies and fruit salad. Includes choice of 1% milk, bottled water or juice. French fries and soft drinks available upon request. - $7.59.
The service was slow, at best, and our server had very little personality, let alone any Disney “magic.” Our bill came to around $70 + 15% tip (we hate to tip less than 20% but the service was not even close to that level!) so it came out to right around $80, then the drinks at the bar, so we spent close to $100 on a meal that was not even close to an Applebee’s in terms of quality or service, yet we spent about double what that Applebee’s meal would have cost.

I have no real problem with Disney prices, because I know that I’m paying for the convenience of not having to leave Disney property, and there is a great selection of dining options. However, I don’t expect to pay more and get less, and this was FAR less than I would have expected from Disney.
Keep in mind that we were only in Disney this trip for the Pirate & Princess Party, so we didn’t even consider the Dining Plan for such a quick trip. There is NO way I would have chosen this for a dining plan table service meal.
The “funny” thing is that DH and I get so swept up in the pixie dust, that we never complain while we’re there, in fact we both just kind of laughed it off, and headed to the food court to get something overly sweet and bad for us at the Riverside Mill (food court) bakery. DD was thrilled :yay: that she got ice cream after DH and I ate all her dinner!!!!!

More than anything, I'm just disappointed in Disney's lack of quality control at Boatwrights. :sad1:

Sad to hear this, since I'm planning on trying Boatwrights during my next trip.

We ate at Boatwright's last September, and I will have to say that none of our party of 7 really enjoyed what we had there. The service was equally lacking. It was the only meal all week that just fell so short. I hear that breakfast there is really good, but I am not so sure I am willing to give it a try. . . :confused3 Too many other places to try.

We ate here last July and loved it. I guess you win some, you lose some.

We ate there our last night at Disney and it was by far the worse meal we have ever had at Disney. Our server was not friendly at all...I don't think she smiled once; she never asked if we wanted refills on our drinks and said maybe 20 words the whole night. My husband and I both had the Prime Rib and it was absolutely terrible...I've had better meals at Ground Round. My DH hated the mashed potatos (or whatever they were). If I remember correctly, the desserts were not much better. It was a sad way to end an otherwise wonderful trip.

Sorry you had a bad experience there - we loved Boatwright's - especially for breakfast.:)

Although we had a bad experience for dinner, we really want to try the breakfast because several people have told us how much they loved it. Unfortunately, we can't squeeze it in this year as we already have Crystal Palace (a must do for us each trip) and Capfe May Cafe. We hope to try Boatwright's for breakfast next year.

Shame that you had such a bad experience.

We ate at boatwright's last september. We loved breakfast. But dinner was awfull.

Thanks Kara. DW and I are going in May staying at POR. We don't have an ADR there but were thinking of a walk in at Boatrights. Looks like we are going to stick with the counter service now. ;)

Thanks for the review - makes me glad we skipped it when we were staying at POR :D

From our several trys there, it seems that Boatwrigts is good for breakfast (kind of hard to mess up), but bad for everything else.

We went to Boatwrights twice. First for breakfast. You won't believe it, we liked the food court better. Then we decided to try it for dinner. We loved it. We had great service and dinner was delicious. We were very pleased.:thumbsup2

It's too bad you had such a lousy experience. Breakfast at Boatwright's is a must-do for me, but I haven't had dinner there since 1993. The CM's at the podium and the servers always treat me like a family friend come home, with full southern graciousness and hospitality. Between that atmosphere and the sweet potato pancakes, I can never wait to go back!

We've stayed at POR 3x's & finaly tried Boatwrights for the 1st time this January. It was awful. I had the Jambalaya & had to add A LOT of salt & pepper. My DD & DM had the prime rib & we're very dissapointed too. We didn't know if they had an off night, or if was always like that.

I also have to report that we ate there last October and the meal was awlful. We won't go back. We use to eat at Boatwrights all of the time and it use to be a favorite. Over the years it has gone downhill. However, the service was always slow. We use to love the breakfast, but we can get a good breakfast at any of the TS locations. We too have crossed them off our list.

DH and I have eaten breakfast there a number of times and enjoy it.

However, between the comments in this thread and Kevin's recent review on the podcast, I'm not going anywhere near Boatwrights for dinner. :sad2:
