I had read somewhere that something free to do is take the disneyworld boat for a ride even if you arent using it to get from point a to point b. Has anyone else heard of this?

there are several ferries around wdw. You can take any of them for free (or with the price of admission if they are in a park). Is there a specific one you were interested in taking?

Humm I was not aware there were several options. I guess I was hoping we just wouldnt like look idiots for not getting off to go to a park and just hanging out for a ride =)

you can ride any of the free ferries...if there is a long wait at the dock, you may need to get off and get back in line again ..this happens at times with the smaller boats...it's one my fave things to do....I love a relaxing boat ride!

Are there specific places we can get on if we are not going to a park that day?

they go from specific docks, back and forth between various places, you need to research what areas you are interested in. the stops aren't negotiable, you just pick a place to visit and go. Even if it's just to the gates of a theme park, only to turn around and get back on no one cares.

Again, you have to be specific about which ferry or resort launch you are referring to. Here are some:

MK ferry between MK and TTC.
Resort launch- MK, GF, Poly.
Resort Launch- MK, Ft Wilderness
Resort Launch - MK, WL
Friendship boats- Epcot, Epcot resorts, DHS
DTD ferry- DTD, POR, POFQ

Any of these may not allow you to stay onboard at the turnaround point. You may have to get off and get in line for a return trip.

Here's a map around the Magic Kingdom. There's also a boat between Epcot's International Gateway and Hollywood Studios which stops at three different resort docks.

If weather is good (reasonable temperature, not raining) I recommend the Poly/GF/MK, the WL/CR/Ft. Wilderness, or any of the Downtown Disney/resort boats, as they have open sides and the breeze is nice, although Downtown Disney to resort boats are small and you often have to wait for 2 or 3 of them before getting on. If cool or wet, Friendship boats (EPCOT to HS with 3 resort stops in between) or the MK to WL or MK to Ft. Wilderness boats are mostly enclosed but not as much fun, IMHO. Except for the two boats within EPCOT world showcase, you don't need a park ticket for any of them, and we've never been asked to produce hotel ID to board.

We went on a non-parks Disney trip last month. It was so much fun. We toured so many resort that we had never seen. One day we drove to DTD and caught the boat that goes up to POR. We had lunch there, toured the resort, and then headed back to DTD. My kids loved it. The next day, we drove to WL and toured the resort. We hopped on the boat that takes you to CR. First you go to FW so the boat ride was sort of long, which we liked. From CR, we took the monorail to POLY. We had dinner there, roasted marshmallows, watched the movie on the beach, saw the Electrical Water Pageant, and then watched Wishes from the beach. Afterwards, we took a boat back to MK where we then switched boats to go back to get our car at WL. This was the best night of our trip.
