Boardwalk Villas - Beware Sofa Beds

My family returned from our WDW vacation last Friday. We stayed at the Boardwalk we had three one bedroom villas, there were 11 of us. The second day my two granddaughters who slept in the pull out sofa bed in room 3093 woke up with bites on their legs and arms. We thought perhaps it was from being out at night, although no one else had any bites.

Upon our return home they were both taken to be seen by their doctor and were diagnosed with scabies. I called the Boardwalk and could not get anyone to talk to me regarding this issue. I didn't want anyone else sleeping in that sofa bed until it was treated.

I called several times including DVC Customer Service and reported the problem. Hopefully they checked it out.

OMG, thank goodeness we never had that problem after staying at BWV.

I am sorry to hear that your granddaughters were diagnosed with scabies, however I would hesitate to blame the sofa bed at BWV. The incubation period on scabies larvae is around 4 weeks so it's quite possible that they picked it up at their school or some other skin-to-skin contact with a child. You might want to mention it to their teacher just in case.

The incubatin period is long but that does not mean it could not have been from the sofabed. We had people rent our beach house and they had left us that present. We had to treat the entire house and call every person who had been in the house for the previous month and their pets. It was a pain to get rid of properly. I hope they took you seriously.

Just gave me another reason to fear sofa beds ... although frankly that steel bar in the middle of your back seems enough for anyone over 50 pounds or so.

wow that stinks I hope they are ok
we also were at BWI in April in a 1 bedroom but we thankfully didnt have any issues

I believe all of the sofa beds over at the Boardwalk have been replaced by the newer type, so you shouldn't have that issue anymore with the bar.

Now, we just have an issue with the "bugs"! :scared1:

Can you give a room number? We'll be staying a 1 bedroom at BWV in less than a month, and I'd rather not stay in that room.

How do you even check for scabies? We won't be staying on the pullout anyway, but I'd still rather not stay in a room with that running around.

Ewwww....we are staying at the Inn in August. Gives me the willies. I don't know anything about these. Are they like bed bugs? Could it have been bed bugs and not scabies? How do you tell the difference.

Just want to make a point here....having bedbugs or scabies has nothing whatsoever to do with cleanliness of the resort. Blame the fact that so many people are traveling, especially flying, nowadays. Those little critters are brought in, on luggage and whatever, and left behind in beds and dresser drawers. So....any resort, anywhere, can leave you open to bloodsucking critters.

Eight years ago...on our Honeymoon, DH and I came home with a case of scabies. Well, first it was DH showing symptoms which flare up and then disappear. My DH thought he was going crazy because they would be more active at night (he would be scratching like a madman). Finally, when I started to scratch too...he went to the dermatologist and found out he had Scabies. This meant that I had them too!!! :scared1: We can remember the cleaning lady scratching her arms all the time when she was changing our bedding (we were present a few times and had conversations with her!). :sad2: It is weird because they go through active and dormant cycles.

Sometimes getting rid of a case of scabies can be difficult. We had no problems though...the Dermatologist perscribed a cream that we had to use to cover our bodies from the tips of toes to our chins. Being Newlyweds...we made the most of it!!!!!!!:lmao: We ended up purchasing an entirely new mattress, bed linens and pillows to ensure that we were rid of them.

I just think you did the correct thing by calling the hotel to inform them. They probably didn't do anything about it though...it's not like they can test. They would only change the bedding.:confused3 Unfortunately, it is a risk people take when they stay in hotels.

BTY...Bedbugs are common too!!!

Mally29 - Thanks for posting the info.

Sounds like contact is from bedding or towels. I assume the hotel left fresh linens. Scabies don't live in the sofa beds like bed bugs. do they? :confused3

We are staying at the Boardwalk in August and had concerns about the comfort of the sofa bed, this makes that concern seem like nothing. :scared1:

Can you kill them (scabies(?) and bedbugs with Lysol?? If so, I'll be packing.

I don't think the OP is blaming the sofa bed from giving her grandchildren scabies. I think she is just warning everyone that the kids slept in that bed and perhaps Disney hasn't treated the bed after she contacted them. It sounds like she is just giving everyone a heads up.

While working out of town staying at Hotels I had ended up with a case of scabies. I though I would go crazy scratching, the dermatologist wouldn't even come near me just stood several feet away and wrote the prescription.

I had visited my sister before I knew what it was or that they are very contagious, so I had infected her. Anyway we had them for 5 months before my sister when visiting me here in Florida went to the beach...several days later she said she wasn't itching any more...I drove straight to the beach and just soaked in the Ocean water after spending a fortune on the prescription creams I was cured.

So anyone that can visit the beach if infected.
