Hi there,

I'm wondering if anyone has done a boardmaker for their trip, and if so, what were the most helpful things that you put on there. Our 3 year old son is severely Apraxic and has some mild sensory issues. In addition to the GAC, I'm thinking a picture board that we can use for both him (and us!) would work great. Still trying to figure out what to put on there, though. We don't have the actual boardmaker program, but our Speech Path does, and she's willing to help put it together.

I'm thinking of things for waiting in line...like an example of "how long we have to wait..." with a visual of a line or something...then maybe pictures of rides? Maybe pictures of characters? Shows? I know I could get really crazy here with putting a lot on there, but I'm just hoping I could do SOMETHING to make the understanding easier.

I'm also planning on putting some safety things on there as well, and putting that on a small circular clip to help him out. Things for him to initiate...hungry, help, scared, etc....

Any other ideas? Thanks for the help!

I don't have time for a long reply, but if you look in the disABILITIES FAQs thread near the top of the board, you will find some helpful things in post #3.
There is a section with links to specific conditions or concerns. You will find one of the headers there is about Communication and PECs.

This board has great mods! Wish I had you guys around here to help me find my car keys!!

Thank you.
I wish I had some posters around to help me with MY car keys sometimes!

I had a pecs book made for my son last year. A mom on ebay makes books and she made it with my input. I posted pictures on a thread last year. Sue has a link to them in the FAQ post 3 under communication/pecs

For example, One page says "Sometimes we may have to wait in a line to go on a ride. Sometimes it can be hard to wait. What should we do?"
On the opposite page are 3 pecs pictures ( removeable with velcro) for him to choose from. Play with a toy ( while in line), have a snack/drink, and I don't want to wait. This way he could choose what he wanted to do.

Another example is a rides page. She made me different pecs pix with photos of his favorite rides. Also characters and shows.

We read this book before our trip and during the trip. I was able to change the velcro pictures every day so he had different choices.

This worked really well and was a big help. I also made one about going on a airplane since this was his first trip.
