Do they search your luggage when you board like they do when you disembark? and how long does it take if they do? Another question: daughter bought a plastic sword for the pirate night are we allowed to take this onboard or is that a nono? Thanks

When you board, I assume that the port authority checks all 'checked' baggage, similar to what they are supposed to be doing on airlines... I think if it's in your checked bag, it should be all right...

The toy plastic swords are fine, they even have some for sale from a little cart on pirate night.

As far as luggage, yes, it's exactly the same as going thru airport security for your carryons and checked. They don't hand-search anything unless a scan is suspicious.

And checked luggage is scanned thoroughly before being brought onboard, so as a forewarning don't put any film in any luggage, carrying it on or just buying some onboard is the safest measure.

I laughed at the film warning signs at the X-Ray machine at the airport 2 weeks ago, wondering if ANYONE uses film anymore. But we ended up buying a $8 underwater disposable film camera for a snuba excursion, so I guess there is still a role for film (although they did have disposable digital underwater cameras too).

We've never had our luggage searched when leaving a DCL cruise. That doesn't mean it can't happen, but I've never seen anyone's luggage searched when disembarking from 5 DCL cruises. Many years ago, some friends had theirs searched when we all disembarked from a cruise on the Norway. Not sure if the customs inspector thought they looked suspicious, or if it was just random.

Oh, I agree about film not being that huge an issue anymore. I even have an underwater digital outfit for snorkeling. But I'm sure there's people who still do use film even now.

The only major difference you will see is that there will be bomb sniffing dogs near the portside luggage dropoff.

They very well may have these on the airlines but they are generally out of sight.
