Boarding Dogs

I agree, the right kennel makes all the difference.

My kennel is run by a vet's office, in fact there are one of the few 24 hour vets in my area, all the other vets (including mine) refer us to them for after-hours emergencies (because when do pets ever get sick when the vet's office is open???).

Anyway, they run an excellent kennel. All kennels have their own private outside area, so the dogs can go in/out at will. For an extra charge, they'll also do "doggie daycare" and take those dogs that pay extra for it and let them all run around in an indoor area carefully supervised. I pay for that when I'm gone for more than a few days. They also run a full grooming service and for a few dollars we can do a quick bath on the morning of her pick up, so she doesn't smell like a kennel, or pay even more and do a full groom (bath, clippers, nail trim, the works). Even when we just do the quick bath she comes home smelling great! :)

And because it's a 24 hour vet clinic, someone is always there and if there is a medical problem, they can recognize it and treat it right away. And they don't mind at all if I call once or twice during my trip to check on her. And of course they have my contact info and will call me if there's an issue (they've never needed to call so far).

It gets expensive though. For a full week with 3 days of doggie day care and the full groom, it's $300. And I wouldn't say my dog loves it, but I don't think she hates it, either. She doesn't like being dropped off and is major excited to be picked up, but once home she doesn't show any unusual behavior that makes me think she was upset the whole time I was gone, mistreated, ill, etc. My dog has anxiety but not to the degree it sounds like your dog does. All I can recomend is to try a shorter stay of one or two days and see how he/she handles it.

I need some reassurance. We are boarding our dogs for the first time and I am VERY nervous. They are both about 4 years old. One is extremely nervous/anxious. She was rescued from the pound and had been abused/neglected. The other dog is extremely attached to me. I cannot go anywhere including to the bathroom without my shadow!

Any suggestions for how to make this easier on them AND ME?

What type of place are you taking them to? I haven't read the entire thread yet, but I myself don't like the "standard" boarding places. I use in-home boarding. I can't stand the thought of my dogs being in cages all day or in a concrete run.

We have found a kennel that comes highly recommended by other neurotic pet owners!! We are going for a visit this weekend. Our dogs would not put in cages but into a large tiled room. They have a fenced in area 40 feet by 40 feet that they will let my "babies" run around together without the other boarded animals. They will walk them twice a day.

Thanks for all of your input. Now I know to...do a pre-visit, bring their own food, toys, beds and an unwashed human scented personal item. I also will ask for them to be bathed before we pick them up! I have already told my husband and kids that I will NOT be the one to drop them off at the kennel. I know I could not handle it!

Oh, and one more thing that might be of some comfort....it is a fact that dogs do not have the same concept of time as humans---to them it may seem like you have been just around the corner, not away for a weeks vacation!;)

THANK YOU---I will focus on this while we are away!
