Board Shutdown tomorrow evening

EMC Fiber Channel SAN. We just use a "Piece" of it. Right now we are spread over 10 disks but our IO wait times are huge and the only thing on that san is the MySql DB that runs this place. They are going to move us to a new LUN with more disks (I forgot to ask how many!)

We can even do pictures! This is today

CPU usage

How many servers are running the boards? Are the Virtual? Any idea what type of RAID they are running on the LUN?

I have no clue about the things you said were changed, but I do notice how fast the board seems to be moving for me today, so HOORAY for that!!! YEA!!! Thanks!!!

Don, IMHO, the boards can easily be sped up with 3 flux capacitors running in series.

I think my head just exploded after reading that. The sad thing is that I recognize the terminology, but have no idea what any of it means...:rotfl:

Whatever you guys did made the boards super-screamin' fast this morning! Most excellent job!! :thumbsup2

Well I kind of have an idea :)
We did a few things last night, we migrated from an older Clarion unit a CX700 to a CX4-960, more cache etc
We changed from 2 RAID5 4+1 groups to to 4 RAID5 4+1 groups so 20 disks instead of 10. It's populated with 300 gig 15k fiber channel drives
if you want more info on the hardware it's here:
Tech Blog

One interesting note- the CX4-960 allows a live migration, that is why the shutdown period wasn't that long, we needed to shutdown to upgrade software but after that it moved over the next few hours, all with the boards running. It was the first time our host had tried that

I won't pretend I understand a single word.

What I do understand is that what you did has made a significant difference in the boards and they weren't down fo an extraordinary long time. So

Thank You Webmaster Alex.

Good stuff, Alex!! We are getting ready to move one of our f5's to a new D.R. site. That stuff is never fun. Good Job!!

Awesome blog, I had not seen that before. I assume that data center is a rental location and they manage all the servers for you but you have full access to make changes? Looks like a pretty awesome setup. Do you have to visit often?

I've never been there! They take care of any hardware problems and any OS issues we can't take care or remotely and we take it from there

Bummer, looks like a cool road trip. Wonder what other big sites they host?

We do sort of the opposite, we just scaled down to 2 servers running VM and they host all 16 virtual machines we run. New HP SAN fiberchannels with RAID0+1. I can do anything to them from my couch, as long as we still have power, which can be an issue around here.

I wonder what an hp DL785 G6 would do? :scared1:

We actually run on very little equipment for a Vbulletin board. I know a lot of other forums our size run on 8 or more servers. Remember only 3 of our servers are for the boards, the others are wdwinfo, dreams etc.
I would think about using virtualization for some of the web servers if Verio supported it but since our mysql traffic can pretty much crush any one server not sure it would do much there.

Believe it or not, not a heck of a lot. We really don't have CPU or RAM issues it's ALL about the drives. I suspect that our EMC san is a bit faster than what they are showing there :)
Now what would be nice is if I could buy that entire EMC unit, I wonder if Pete has a spare 750k laying around.....

Yikes, 750K. I showed our administrators a budget of 1.1 million this summer. That included a new phone system and new switches (Cisco), new wiring and new servers/SAN.

If you are maxing out the existing CPU power then VM would be senseless. We just put in a new Web Filter, so our only server that really maxed out is now on an appliance (DeepNines) so we are able to run the others servers on two new DL380s with 12 gigs of RAM.
