I don't know exactly what this means but, WW has a free personal assessment and, I've taken it a few times since joining back in January. I was at 38 BMI!! And, I'm down to 31 but, this is still considered obese. I know I was obese and, I consider myself still overweight now but, not obese anymore. It's hard sometimes to fit the 'norm' isn't it? :(

Anyone else know their BMI?

Hi Kim! I know exactly what you mean. When I first started WISH I had a target weight in mind as a goal, but then I found out my BMI (36.3 when I started) I adjusted my goal weight to be in a "normal" BMI. I am currently at a BMI of 26.5 (depending on which BMI calculator you use) and still considered "overweight" although I don't feel it. I have roughly 10 more pounds to go to get into the "normal" range, but sometimes I wonder about the whole system, I always seem to be fixated on a number of some sort.

I found this quote on one of the BMI chart sites:
Body Mass Index (BMI) is one of the most accurate ways to determine when extra pounds translate into health risks. BMI is a measure which takes into account a person’s weight and height to gauge total body fat in adults. Someone with a BMI of 26 to 27 is about 20 percent overweight, which is generally believed to carry moderate health risks. A BMI of 30 and higher is considered obese. The higher the BMI, the greater the risk of developing additional health problems.

I think I have come so far and I must be doing something right for my health, I feel good, I look okay, why not stop. But then I read the above and it makes me strive for that magical number once again.

I just heard on a health programme (in the Uk) a couple of days ago, that doctors are going to stop using the BMI as they now feel that it's not that accurate! Instead they are going to go off people's waist measurements. Apparently according to the MBI one of our top athletes (100 & 200 M sprinter) was considered overweight!

interesting.........

my PDA WW journal figures my BMI at 24.4 with an ideal of 23.6 for me. It says I should hit 137 and that is actually where I would love to maintain. I've been there before and I feel great.

It appears to figure BMI by age, height, sex and weight.

Dr. Phil's book has you take a waist to hip ratio. Measure your waist and divide by your hip measurement. I know my goal was .8 or less, but it depended on female/male and maybe age too? I don't have the written book to just look it up, maybe someone else will if you are interested? (hint hint)

My doctor has always focused on the waist/hip ratio. I think men can be at a 1, but woman need to be at less than one.
