Yesterday we celebrated mothers day for MIL at her daughters house. We had BBQ wtih all the trimmings plus desert. About 2 hours after eating, my SIL decides that we should all test our blood sugar leveles. Her husband is diabetic. Everyone gets theirs tested, mine is 196. Everyone freaks out. I need to get to the dr etc. I just had blood work done and my dr says all was normal. I am getting a copy of my results from the drs office. Would you mention to the dr that I did this?

I suppose you could mention it to the doctor just to put your mind at ease. I wouldn't freak out about it or worry about it. Especially since you just had your bloodwork done. Just because they know what their numbers should be 2 hours after eating, doesn't mean that yours would be the same. Maybe you metabolise slower or something.

I would probably mention it. Your Dr. may want you to check it a couple times a day for a week or so.

One high reading is not cause to worry. A trend of high BS would be what they are looking for.

This is how my mom got the ball rolling for diagnosis for Diabetes.

She was under a DR's care - and had, had blood work done as well - but it was one of those 'lets all take our blood sugar' moments that she ended up going and getting diagnosed (short version...)

And the earlier you catch this nasty disease and get it under control the better - if thats the case. My mom ended up passing away from Diabetes in January 2006 - at age 55.

I'd mention it.

I would mention it to your doc. Your blood work that you had may not have included anything to do w/ 'sugar'. Do you know if a hemaglobin A1C or a fasting blood glucose was done? 196 2 hrs after a meal is a bit on the high side. Call the docs office & give a message to his/her nurse, better to be safe than sorry. Family history of diabetes & obesity play huge factors in diabetes & only your doctor will be able to set your mind at ease. :goodvibes

That's a bit high for a 2 hour post prandial (after eating) sugar.

If I recall correctly, it should be under either 120 or 140.

I'd probably mention it. I'd also ask SIL if the monitor she used is properly calibrated etc. (that has to be done with certain frequency. The frequency depends on the type of monitor). If it has been properly calibrated, then I'd mention it. If it has not been properly calibrated, then the reading could be off.

My sister was just diagnosed...

The doctor's had done 'fasting' blood sugar test.
They thought she was fine.
Those may not catch early diabetes, or post-prandial hyperglycemia.
This simple 'fasting' screening is not always enough.

My sisters health has been seriously impaired because this went undiagnosed until she finally went on her own, bought the stuff to take her blood sugar, and it was very very high... Now, the doctor's take her seriously.

Go get what you need to monitor your blood sugar... monitor it thoroughly and log every single level. From fasting in the morning, to after meals.. bedtime, etc...

Then, take this information to your doctor.

Yes, it's a bit high. But nothing to really freak out about unless it's closer to 300. When did you start the 2 hour count (when you started dinner or after desert)? I agree with the previous posters that you should mention it to your doctor.

DH is also diabetic and his numbers were usually that high and even into the 200's during the day. He's tried it with oral meds but it wasn't enough and now he's on insulin in addition to his oral meds.

You need to get yourself to the doctor and get some more tests. Better safe than sorry.

I'm going on my 27th year with it. Diabetes is serious stuff. Don't let fear keep you from grabbing control of it though.

I definetly would call my doctor. 196 is high for a blood sugar, 2 hours after eating.

It may be nothing but diabetes is nothing to play around with.

Yes it is a bit high, but how much did you actually eat? Was it more than you would for a normal meal? If it was, then it's probably nothing to worry about. You could mention it to your doctor - but also tell him/her how much you had to eat. Also, when you checked was it 2 hours AFTER you all ate, or 2 hours after you began eating? Sometimes that can even make a difference.

My DH is diabetic and we've been all through this. If he over eats (or has a bigger meal than usual) it is nothing for his blood sugar level to be on the high side. We've even tested me (I'm not diabetic) and when I eat a normal meal (usually no dessert) and test 2 hours after eating, my blood sugar goes down to less than 120. If I over eat (including dessert) and test 2 hours afterwards - it's still high (like around 176 or so).

I don't think you have anything to worry about - but if you are worried, I would definitely tell your doctor then.

Another thing....BBQ sauce (or anything "tomato" based) will raise your glucose levels A LOT!

Try taking yout BS again after a normal meal.

I had gestational diabetes 2x - so I monitor myself each day STILL since I am at such a risk for Type 2. It's nothing to play around with. Better safe than sorry...

A hemoglobin A1C will give you a better picture of your average blood sugars over the course of the last few months. A spot reading like that is not very useful, especially in the setting of barbeque food, rich desserts, soda or alcohol, etc. Your doctor can order the A1C bloodwork if there's a concern.
