Blisters and XC

My DD has a nasty blister on her heel. She's running X-country and it came from a fold on her socks when she was wearing her spikes.

Any thing we can do to get this thing to heal. I bought Band-aid Blister healer and yesterday I made her air it out and not wear socks. If there is something else we can do, I'd love to hear about it.

Her regular running shoes do not give her blisters. I think that her spikes are fine, she just had a fold in her socks and I bought new socks. The spikes are tight but they tell me spikes are tight.

BTW for anyone who runs. She made a PR on her first run, 38 seconds better than last year and improved on that 15 seconds more on Sat. That's in the heat with a blister and a cramp. I think that it's going to be a great year for her! I'm very proud.
 
I was an athletic trainer at a college before kids and what I would do for the blister for when she is running is see if you can find a product called "Second Skin". Spendco makes it an you should be able to find it in a sporting good store. It is a jel filled pad that cushions the blister. You will need to put a band-aid or some athletic tape over this to keep it in place. I would put the second skin on and then put some moleskin over that (you can get moleskin at Walmart, etc.). The rest of what you are doing is fine, keep it aired out as much as possible so it dries out and heals. If it isn't popped, poke a small hole in the blister and let it drain, that will help the healing, but DON'T take the skin off. Apply some antibiotic ointment if it is popped or you drain it.

I would check her running spikes and see if there is a rough edge or something that was rubbing on her heal. If there was, put some moleskin on that part of her shoe. I would wrap the moleskin the entire way around the heal of the shoe to keep it in place.

Tell your DD congrats on her PR! DS is in cross country, too. Our varsity boys team is two time defending state champs and competed in the Nike Team National Cross Country meet last December. Our girls team took 6th at state and is one of the teams favored to win the state this year. We are huge XC fans (DH ran in high school and college, too).

Deodorent! I use the dry stuff not the spray but I heard both work. You just put it on your feet and it stops the rubbing...
 

Nothing on healing but here is how you prevent them (got this here on the DIS when I used to get blisters at WDW and now I get none!)


Socks without cotton. Cotton causes the moisture. Try Thorlo (can be expensive) or some other acrylic/polyester blend.

Body Glide (sold at Eastern Mountain Sports). USed by hikers. This made the biggest difference. All natural and greaseless goes on like a stick deodorant so maybe that is why the previous poster said deodarant works as well. It prevents the chafing. I swear by it and tell anyone who ever suffers from blisters.
 
Thanks for all the advice. I tried to find second skin or new skin and couldn't find either. I bought something that looks like what you described from Dr. Sholl's. It's called Blister Healer or something like that.

These are the same spikes that she used last year and they didn't give her blisters. Her feet have not grown, I'm buying the same size shoes I did last year.

HS girls have this thing about socks. They can not show. She wears the worst socks and it drives me crazy. I really think that it's bad socks and not the shoes. I bought better socks that should help the problem and told her that she has to wear them when she races or runs! I don't care if her socks show.

Teenage girls drive me crazy!
