Blister/skin rubbing against shoe?

I run in Asics 2160's which are *fairly* new, I'm about 40-50 miles into them. I had this same exact shoe beforehand, although the ones I'm in now are a half-size bigger (the other ones were too small, according to the shoe store). The inside right foot, just outside the ball of the foot, is rubbing against the shoe and causing a type of blister, although it seems like it's more like just skin rubbing at this point. I've tried band-aids (the ones for blisters), but I'm not sure it's helping much.

Does anyone have any tried-and-true remedies for blisters/skin rubbing against the shoe? I guess I could try Bodyglide prior to a run, but I just wanted to see if anyone had other ideas.

I should also mention I have really obnoxious bunions :headache:, so I'm sure the protrusion is not helping, but I've never had any issues with blisters/skin rubbing beforehand.

Thanks!!!! :)

Body glide is you best bet at this point. You may want to play with different socks to see if you can get the sock to slide instead of skin. You may also want to use duct tape. Apply then body glide over the tape. Works 100% better than anything from Bandaid.

You may also want to go by the shoe store this week. They may exchange them if not too old or in too bad condition.

Thanks Coach Charles, I'll definitely try some of those tactics. Do you think the shoe is fitting too loosely? I know going down a half-size was causing other issues though. Maybe I need to experiment with tightening the shoelaces more, which I tend to forget about doing.....

This is a "fun" issue. I am dealing with it some myself. The problem for me though is that it is so hot during my runs right now that my shoes and socks get drenched in sweat by the end of my runs. For any run beyond 10 miles, I am almost guaranteed to get rubbing. So far tape is the only thing that works reasonably well for me. I use some kind of athletic tape I picked up from a sporting goods store, but duct tape may actually be better, though it is stiffer (not going to stretch like athletic tape). For really long runs, I have actually changed socks half way through.

I have no issue with rubbing during cooler seasons (same shoes and socks). I also have no issues with short runs.

You can get it at any running, store. Also big box sports stores like Dick's. If nothing is near, then online at any sports store.

is bodyglide just for the feet or will/does it work for on the inner thighs?

IT may be better known for preventing chub rub and seam rub issues.

You aren't wearing cotton socks are you? Before I know any better I used to get those friction blisters on my feet and as soon as I stopped wearing them they went away.

Mine are not cotton. I am not sure what the fabric is, they are "running" socks though. They may not be the best. They give a good snug fit around the foot, but they are kind of loose in the back of the heel area (maybe why it rubs more than protects). They are low cut, barely reaching the ankle.

Do you have some good recommendations for socks?

I've got a dozen or so different brands and styles of socks in my running drawer. My favorite over-the-ankle socks are Wigwam's Ultimax Ironman, Asics's Kayano, and Under Armour's Lo-Cut.

I went to my local sporting goods store and couldn't find BodyGlide (I did pick up an assortment of GU flavors to try out though!). Will my local phamacy have it? I have a feeling if I walk into Walgreens and ask for BodyGlide, they'll direct me to the condom aisle, lol!:rotfl:

Like John I have a bunch of different brands. I tend to like my socks kind of thin. I have a couple of Wigwam Ironman socks and some Asics though I don't remember the exact name.

Another option for problem areas is Aquaphor healing ointment. You can get the generic Walmart brand, Equate, and it works the same. I use it between my toes for some longer races or if it is supposed to rain for the race.

Look on line at roadrunnersports.com. Or, I know we have a discount as WISHERs at some site. Just not sure which one.

I wish Asics still made Keyano socks. Mine are almost all worn out. Last year I did pick up a few pair of Injini socks. Somehow I created an injury in my left foot - well a defect for than an injury where one of the middle toes lays over to the lateral side of the foot. This creates a hot spot between two toes and the Injini toe socks took care of that in a hurry.

Charles, they do still make them. My local Fleet Feet has them in stock and they're still listed on the Asics web site.

Will look it up. I know they were going off the market maybe 2 or 3 years ago so I stocked up with 18 pairs. The only real issue with these or the Injini socks is one must be careful when packing for a race. I have arrived at a race with two left socks.

I wear Balega socks and love them, so to answer a pp'ers question I am not using cotton socks. During my run this morning, one of the girls in my group thought the blister was because I'm starting to ramp up the miles right now - plain and simple. I did slather on a bunch of Aquaphor this morning, and did NOT notice any skin rubbing! So, I'll keep that stuff handy and may also try out Bodyglide as an alternate.

Tanya - I am in Clemmons, NC. So I am about an hour from you.

Anyway, I use Nike Dri Fit, Balega, and Champion Duo Dry socks. Kind of depends on the shoe I am running in. Today was so hot and humid. I was in the Nike Lunaracer with the champion socks (which are really thin). When I finished, I could feel the squishing from all the sweat in the socks and shoes. The tape held up okay though, so no new blistering. Now I just wish the shoes would "drain" better.
