1) This is a really good thing.
2) I know several of the Blackstone guys from their auto investments.
3) They run a tight, but good ship.
4) They increase value, then exit in 5-7 years.
5) This should be welcomed by all - shareholders and guests.

NOTE: I am sure they will not force Disney into bankruptcy, but if their past is an indication of the future, they will steal some business with improvements to the local parks.

PHILADELPHIA/NEW YORK (Reuters) – Private equity firm Blackstone Group (BX.N) is in talks to buy Anheuser-Busch InBev NV's (ABI.BR) theme parks, and a deal could be reached as early as next week, sources familiar with the situation said on Friday.

The deal, which hasn't been signed and could fall apart, might fetch roughly $2.5 billion to $3 billion, said one of the sources, who declined to be named because they were not authorized to speak with the media.

The estimated price was within the range at which analysts valued the park chain last year when InBev acquired Anheuser-Busch.

If finalized, it would mark the largest U.S. private equity deal so far this year at a time when activity among financial sponsors has begun to revive.

AB InBev and Blackstone declined to comment.

The 10 amusement parks, which include Sea World, Busch Gardens and Sesame Place, have long been slated to be sold as part of InBev's plans to pay for its 2008 acquisition of Anheuser-Busch.

The brewer's parks ranked as the No. 5 global theme park chain as ranked by annual attendance, according to a 2007 report by Themed Entertainment Association/Economic Research Associates. It drew more than 22 million customers in 2007, the most recent year in which data was available.

The deal would add to Blackstone's existing amusement assets, which include Merlin Entertainment Group, the owner of Madame Tussauds wax museums, Legoland and the London Eye Ferris wheel. The private equity firm also holds a 50 percent stake in Universal Orlando theme parks.

Rival theme park operators include Walt Disney Co (DIS.N), General Electric Co's (GE.N) Universal Studios, Six Flags Inc and Cedar Fair LP (FUN.N). Six Flags, which operates 20 parks in North America, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June.

Theme parks have been hurt during the recession as families curb spending habits

I dont think so. It would hurt Universal more. Sense both are pretty similar parks.

You do realize Blackstone owns half of Universal Orlando, right? All the sudden, Disney's two biggest competitors are on the same team. And Sea World finally has an owner that specializes in the theme park business, not school book publishing or brewing. I'm with Rusty Scupper on this, not going to bankrupt Disney, but right now and for the next two years, Blackstone will have been on the cutting edge of Orlando theme parks (Aquatica, Manta, Rock-it, Harry Potter...).

I work for a Blackstone owned company--very aggressive growth organization. They also have a pronounced affinity for slashing overhead.

That said, I think competition benefits us--anything that increases the pressure to make the consumer happy has to be good.

MassJester, I like that term, "pronounced affinity for slashing overhead". That's good. I'd bet that a lot of laid off CM's would say that Disney has a little bit of that, too. Well stated.

You realize the only reason tourist come here is because of Disney Right? You're talking about Blackstone Bankrupting Disney? Disney gets 5 times more traffic than Sea World or Universal, no Disney no other Theme Parks. I also see you are posting your comments on a Disney Board, not a Universal or Sea World Board because they are completely secondary. If Disney wasn't in Central Florida, Universal & Sea World would not be here either.

I love all the parks in Florida, but Blackstone isn't going to dent Disney's numbers. The only thing they can do is hope to get more people thru the turnstiles, which is going to be hard considering the economy, they do not own their own hotels, or they do not provide transportation to their parks from anywhere like Disney does. I am happy Blackstone is going to purchase them because they do run Theme parks and will keep them operating correctly, but wait until those corporate cuts come because they want to make more money. No more Dinner shows, less animal attractions, higher costs for merchandise, less Cast Members, & higher ticket prices. Like one MassJester said it may say Universal or Sea World but it will be less of it.

Wow, defensive much?

I have heard rumors in this area, that Disney wanted Sesame Place only, b/c it would give them Elmo to be used in their parks.

I love Sesame Place (its cheap (at least for season passes) and its local ))

Kyoung I have to agree with you,the mouse is the number 1 reason people
head to orlando.I hope blackstone does change this because it would take
a hell of a lot to even dent the big D!!!!

Just got back from our 18th trip!I envy all who live in florida and get to visit
semi regularly.

Yes, but Busch Gardens and Universal are very similar parks. Disney does not have a park like them. So this will hurt one of those 2 parks. SeaWorld is still seen as an aquarium with a few rides. Aquatica is cool and a lot of people talk about wanting to go there but not many people actually follow through. A water park like Aquatica isn't quite big enough to take people off Disney property.

Last time I checked USF was was not featuring animals as well as rides.

I think you could say BGT and DAK are quite similar.

Aquatica is cool and a lot of people talk about wanting to go there but not many people actually follow through.
Aquatica is jammed every weekend . . .

Three strikes you're out . . . .

You realize the only reason tourist come here is because of Disney Right?
Tourism was here long before Disney . . .

they do not provide transportation to their parks from anywhere like Disney does.
Yes they do.

Load brain before shooting mouth . . . .

I said similar not same *******.
Both Uni and Busch have lots of coasters. Something the Disney Parks do not have. Last time I checked AK didn't have 6 roller coasters. Do you work at Aquatica? Even though all info on park attendance is guesstimates its pretty easy to tell most people would perfer to stay on sight and go to BB or TP over having to find travel arrangements to Aquatica. We dont really count towards that statement because we live so close.

Universal and Busch are not that similar, sorry. First, are you referring to Universal Studios or Islands of Adventure in your comment, because even those two parks are vastly different from each other, so combining them and stating that they're somehow very similar to Busch is :confused3

Have you actually visited the Universal parks before, or are you just hearing rumors that "its all rollercoasters"?

Islands of Adventure.
If you look at BG and IOA you can see the exact same rides with different themes. Tidal Wave= Jurassic Park, Stanely Falls=Dudley, Popeye=Congo, Montu=Dueling Dragons. IOA has a couple more kiddie rides, while BG has more coasters.
I go every year for free with UCF or when I get free tickets. It's only worth it when its free.
It goes Disney> Busch> Universal.

Oh please God no! Not Elmo:scared1:. Most obnoxious character ever!

:rotfl:

sorry

:lmao:

oops

:rotfl2:

All Parks are great parks "Disney, IOA, Universal, Sea World, BG" that what makes America great! Disney has the edge I am afraid, you need to sit an and think about this with rollercoaster’s. Cedar Point one of the Best Amusement Parks on Earth paid 25 mil each for MF, TTD, Maverick. Disney paid 100 million each for Sorin' MS, EE. This is scale Disney has to offer compared to anyone else 3X. I want to go for a Thrill I will go to IOA, CP, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Six Flags Great America, Six Flags Great Adventure even Busch Gardens but If I want Magic I go to Disney. Disney to me is the only one that can give Magic. I do love those other parks but Disney is far from any one of those.

CNBC reporting this morning they expect this deal to be announced today....
