DD will be turning 16 in a couple of weeks. Her friends have been doing some expensive parties. I already told her we are not renting a hall, hiring DJ's, inviting tons of kids. She knows we can't afford it, but I would like to do something nice.

I was looking at the candy station thing, but she said it's already been done. So I thought maybe we could do a blacklight party in our large family room. She liked the sound of it, but now how to pull it off without spending lots of money. :)

Anyone done this that can offer some money saving tips? Or maybe another type of party we could throw? There will be around 10 or 11 girls. TIA, lori

I think you should be able to replace all the lights in your "party" area with black light - lightbulbs fairly inexpensivly. You might bring in extra standing lamps from other rooms.

The party supply store or a craft store should also have some black light body paint, they can do designs on their faces, and use white fingernail polish on their finger and to nails.

Maybe some white sheats on the furniture, or black sheets on the furniture that you've decorated with paint. Or one hanging up that they can paint?

My daughters 16th was in the garage and they had a few black lights and loud music, and a huge cake fight.

Just make sure to inspect what the room looks like with all black lights. It's amazing what shows up!

Highligters opened and soaked in glasses of water. When removed, the glasses of water will glow under the lights. Makes great centerpieces.

hang a sheet or paper on the wall for a graffiti wall, those highlighters can be used for that too. Hit the dollar store for glow necklaces etc. tape black plastic garbage bags over any windows, you will need to really block any light from getting into the room, from other rooms as well. I think it is a great idea. White foods would be fun to see if they glow, popcorn, marshmallows. We did a 50's theme party for our DD, we did rent a place but it was the church for $50. Had White Castles, candy cigarettes rolled into the guys sleeves, I made a cut out of a '57 Chevy for the kids to get behind for pictures. We did the graffiti wall too. I took tons of pictures from the 50's to Kinkos and had them blow them up to 24x30 size, hung those on the walls and tons of old 45 records and the deal was you HAD to dress up..nothing eleborate, but at least get in the 50's theme.
16 is awesome, hope your DD has a great time!

We just did this for DD's 12th bday party last Friday. Here are a few things we did:

1. Hung black plastic sheeting (Walmart paint section) on wall...painted grafitti on it with glow in the dark paint in a spray can. We left the living room lights on until the party time so the paint would be activated. It looked amazing!!

2. Used black foam board to make a Happy Bday sign using neon green paint marker. Also used black foam board and marker for guests to write messages to DD.

3. For food table used serving dishes/plates/cups in pink, green, and white colors....check Hobby Lobby or Party City's Luau section for this.

4. Hung black light in living room and kitchen...we already had these. I think we paid $20 for them at Party City...I would get these as opposed to using the bulbs. The bulbs just don't work well.

DD said this was her favorite party so far.

I bought alot of glow items at the Dollar Tree but you should also check out oriental trading...they have great glow stuff.

The regular florescent tubes work better than the CFL black light bulbs. You could look at renting them, but a few 2' long ones should work quite well, and they're fairly cheap. They're also great for Halloween decorating, so there's a multipurpose use (and if you're trying to find out where the dog/cat peed in the house...).

Home Depot does sell multi colored CFL bulbs, you can put a couple lamps at the entry way with cool colors. Or if it's a hallway, light it up with the colored lamps.

A black sheet splattered with paint to glow would look awesome over the couch. And help with clean up, as you can just roll it up, take it outside and shake off all the crumbs, instead of trying to vacuum out all the crevices of the couch.

DS's 16th bday was a blacklight party and it was loads of fun.

I purchased blacklight reactive plates, utensils and cups from blacklight.com and those things looked like they had batteries in them under the blacklight. I was amazed by them, very cool. And they shipped very quickly-I ordered around 4PM and had them the next day-less than 24 hrs! Great experience.

I also ordered neon gangster hats from oriental trading-the kids loved them.

Walmart sells the entire blacklight unit in the lighting section for about $15, we used 4 but was also lighting a fairly large area.

I bought fluroescent highlighters and poster paints. I then took old Christmas wrapping paper and taped it up on the wall white side out. Duck tape makes some very bright neon colored tape so I used that. It was a graffiti wall and the kids seemed to like it.

Michael's has tubes of glow bracelets $1 for 15 bracelets. I bought tons of those and the kids were creative making necklaces, crowns, glasses, etc.

Just look for anything that is neon or glows and they will love it.

For cheap food I just made snack type stuff-queso dip, meatballs, veggie tray, etc.

I just wanted to add to tell the kids to wear white or neon colors. The blacklight will show up any lint or specks on dark clothing.

At the bar people use highlighers to write on themselves and then it glows in the light. You could have your daughter and her friends design black teeshirts with paint on them ahead of time that glows... thats pretty cheap at craft stores...

Laundry soap also glows under the blacklight. When we were younger we used to draw on our walls with it and it would glow really bright then we would just wipe the walls down and do it again. It works for painting on clothing too:) Plus its cheaper than the glow paint.

A friend of mine used laundry det for her dd's party a few years ago and I gotta say it in no way compared to the glow you get from the spray paint. I would spend the money on the paint if it were me.
