Black tie event tomorrow night - update pg. 4 picture post #59

I know this type of even isn't your thing, but try to relax and have fun with it. If you go in dreading it and/or thinking you'll have a bad time, then the night is going to be horible for you. If you keep a positive attitude, you may just find yourself having a good time! :) Good luck!

I agree.:thumbsup2

It's good to step out of our comfort zone. :thumbsup2 I bet you'll look great! :thumbsup2

I think you should wear your hair the way you are most comfortable. It doesn't have to be up.

I agree. OP is already uncomfortable dressing for the affair. Why not go with a simple comfortable hairstyle?

And, BTW TLHB70....don't forget to have fun!!:goodvibes

I love, love, love your dress!
I wear my hair up a few times a week and I love looking for ideas for updo's. YouTube is an awesome resource. You can do a seach on elegant hairstyles and watch dozens of videos of people showing you how to fix your hair in various ways. Since you've already scheduled your stylist you might want to watch a few to get an idea of which style you'd like.

I love the dress too! You got a lot of great ideas for your hair.

I was wondering when you bought the dress? You might be able to take the receipt for a price adjustment if it wasn't too long ago. Some places do that.

Ok, now that you have the hair thing figured out--not that I want to cause you more worry but I was always told that women should wear a long dress to a black tie event :scared1:. Hopefully it isn't an issue but if you are the only one there in a short dress are you going to be ok with that or do you know the most of the women will be wearing short dresses??? Sorry in advance for adding another worry. If it were a wedding I wouldn't care but a work event is different.

I bought it close to two weeks before Christmas. I considered going last night to see if they will give me a partial refund. I might do that today. I just have not had time to go back to the mall.

Yes, I understand. I was concerned about that thing too. I tried on long and short dresses, but I made sure the short dresses were very formal looking. When I found this dress that I loved, I asked several women around me (workers, other ladies trying on in the dressing room, etc.). They told me that it was ok. I then asked the lady at the place where my DH bought his tux. (Yes, he bought a tux. I told him to rent one, but he said that he will buy it for future occasions.:rolleyes1) She said that my dress is fine. She said it was specified as a white tie event, ball, or gala then I would need a long dress. She said that my dress should be fine. I have told DH that if we get there and all of the other women are in long dresses that we will have to leave. I hope I will be ok. I had such a hard time finding a dress I like so when I finally found this one I bought it.

We go to multiple black tie events every year and I never, ever wear my hair up. I, too, have shoulder length hair and it never would occur to me to wear my hair up. That just is not me. You already are a little uncomfortable going to this thing so why amp up your discomfort level with a hairstyle that is foreign to you? That does not make sense. Wear the pretty dress, put on some make up, jewelry and go. Don't do too much outside your comfort level...then you will be miserable and worried and won't have a good time.

Have fun.
Thank you. That makes me feel better! I scheduled my appointment early enough so that I will have extra time to come home and wash/redo it if I need to. DH said we will leave here around 6 PM. (The event is at 6:30 PM.) My appointment is at 3. I plan to do my makeup before the appointment so that will leave me with time at home to wash and style my hair if I hate the style. I will ask the stylist to only pull part up. That will be much more comfortable for me.

I am really trying to relax and go with a positive attitude. DH told me last night that one specific co worker and his wife are going. I really like this wife. She is a lot like me. As a matter of fact, we have been to a few Panthers games together. She is going to be there so I feel better. I know that I will have someone to talk to if DH is busy talking. Her DH told my DH that she will be relieved that I will be there too.

Great idea! I will try to do this today before I leave! Thank you! :thumbsup2

Just smile and relax and breathe. If you feel like you are out of place, breathe while counting to five and then smile at your husband. Look at him and think how handsome he is looking and how your pictures will be great.

Do you have a clutch? Will there be a coat check? Bring lipstick or powder or something as an excuse to slip away for a moment in the ladies room if it just gets to be too much.

In the end you were invited because the guests of honor wanted you to be there. There must be something that they like about ya'll.;) Have a great time and can't wait to see some pictures. I LOVE the dress. I think it's very classic and the color is gorgeous.

I totally disagree.

Nowadays you see more and more girls and woman wearing short dresses to events that used to be long-it's the trend.

Even the formal dances-like proms have a mix-where they used to be all long.

I think your dress is great!:thumbsup2

OP -- the dress is fantastic. Absolutely do not sweat the long dress thing as that concern is out-of-date -- you will be way more in style with short. The current trend is definitely short dresses, especially among younger people.

the dress is awesome love it!! i'm subbing for pics!

It sounds like you have it all under control. Your dress is gorgeous. You will look stunning and I have a feeling you are going to enjoy yourself immensely. Have a great time this evening! :)

Op, do NOT worry about the short dress thing. If you've got killer legs... I say show them off. Have a great time at the party. Live it up!

A true black tie event would be long dresses and ballgowns, but an anniversary party even labeled black tie will be treated by a lot of women as formal. I'm sure lots of women there will be wearing shorter dresses so I wouldn't worry at all, your dress is very pretty. If you were going to a different kind of black tie event, I would definitely recommend getting a long gown.

Yes, I do have a clutch. DD has one for a formal that she has. I am using it.
My neighbor is letting me use her long black coat. I only have a dressy short one. She was kind enough to let me use her long one. I assume they will be checking coats since it will be so cold here tonight.
I hope I am set.
Thank you all so much for your help and encouragement! DH is not the least bit nervous! Guys have it so much easier, I think.

I was going to suggest the same -- usually the stores have a two week window on sale items. And Nordstrom is known for customer service.

Your dress is lovely and is perfectly appropriate.

The advice about wearing only long dresses to a black tie event is very dated. Either is appropriate and personally haven't worn a long dress to a black tie event in years.
