Our local humane society had a "Black Friday" sale yesterday.

They waived the adoption fee ($95 cats/ $135 dogs) for all darker/black furred animals.

Their adoptions include the altering of the animal and most shots/worming medications depending on the animals age.

I just thought that it was a really neat idea. They had 23 successful adoptions and 15 more applications are pending!

Anyone else have a humane society that does something like this??

I wish!!! Ours never drops their prices for any reason.

I think that this is a great idea. I would assume that their screening was as stringent as always and that by doing this some people will come to them instead of the pound or answering the endless ads for free or almost free kittens and puppies.

That's a great idea. Black dogs usually have a harder time getting adopted than their lighter color counterparts.

Why is it harder to adopt out a darker dog than a lighter one? I never even heard of that .... interesting. Our adopted 8 year old hound (brought him hom a year ago) is a brown/black German Shepard color looking guy!!

We are dying for another dog right now but can't swing the adoption fee just before Christmas since DH's company screwed up his W-4 and work location for the first 5 weeks he worked there and we lost $1350 in take home money.

I want a smaller dog (my hound is a skinny 70lbs!) but I could care less the color. This disposition is most important with a toddler and another on the way.

I wish our humane society did that, great idea!!

I want to know why black dogs are harder to find a home for also--I've never heard of that.

Our humane society did half off all black animals on Black Friday - dogs, cats and bunnies. Our newspaper said black animals can be perceived as unfriendly and also that some people are superstitious. I would love to adopt a bunny but I don't know if my current little bunny would be happy about that. He gets stressed quite easily. :upsidedow

That is a great idea. Once in a while I read that our local hum. soc. has sales. Our lab is black and we were also told (and I have read) that black dogs are harder to adopt (cats too I think).

people do tend to shy away from black dogs. I have had it happen to me. I have a tri color (black/tan and white) smooth collie I take him for a walk and not too many people will give him a look or comment on what a nice looking dog he is. On the other hand when i walk a sable color smooth coolie (sable is the tan *Lassie* color) same size as the tri color people will go out of their way to come over and comment on how cute the dog is.

The humane society in the county above us did this. I wanted to go. I thought it was a great idea!!!

I have read that there is prejudice against black cats (mainly due to superstitions and stuff) and they stay in shelters longer and are hard to find homes for...but I never knew that applied to dogs too!

I think black cats are gorgeous and so are black dogs.:lovestruc I wish our humane society would do the same thing, I think its a great idea!

So strange! I've only heard of not adopting out black cats around Halloween. We have two dark labs, a black cat, and I love dark colored pets!! Our black cat is huge (not fat, but big!) and looks like a little panther. His name is Zachary Binx. Our black lab is named Toby. We have a chocolate lab named Casey and a yellow/white lab names Beau. We have a long haired orange tabby named Boo and he is the spawn of satan, I swear. hee hee

If your bunny doesn't want a bunny friend, would it be easy to keep them apart in your home? I got a 2nd bunny several years ago and hoped she would bond with the bunny I already had. The rescue shelter where I got her tried to help me with the bonding process and thought they would be fine together. Well, my boy bunny wasn't quite a gentleman and kept biting and chasing her. We finally decided they would both be happier apart. They have separate cages and separate playtimes in our family room. They are aware of each other and sometimes touch noses through the wire, but I don't put them together.

On the other hand, if your bunny is the nervous type, he might appreciate having a bunny friend to comfort him. Some of the more timid bunnies seem to enjoy having a dominant friend around. My sister has a brother/sister pair. The boy is a chicken bunny and the girl wears the pants in the family. When he gets scared, the boy goes and hides behind her and she sits there ready to face the danger (usually it's just the vacuum cleaner or a car outside!).

I have also heard that black pets are harder to adopt out. I have two black foster bunnies right now and no one has expressed interest in them. People tend to choose the tan or multi-colored ones. When it comes to bunnies, pure white ones (especially if they have pink eyes) also tend to be overlooked. We call it the plight of the BWB (big white bunny).

Wow, I have two black kitties (see my family siggie) and love them to death. Sad how superstition still affects some people.:confused3

I found an article about it - http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23472518/

I've heard about this and have seen it in action at our local shelters. I don't think anyone knows exactly why people are less likely to adopt them, but it is certainly true.

And sad.

I wish I had a 1,000,000 acres because I would adopt absolutely all of them.

I can see how black dogs might appear more threatenig. My Milhouse looks and sounds like a total tough guy, but he is as soft as Fluffernutter!

wow, that article was an eye opener. we adopted our black lab mix from a local no kill shelter, but he was trucked up from West VA with his littermates. I wonder if that was one of the reasons why?

I thought it was a great idea, too!!

I volunteered at the shelter while I was in high school so I was aware that the darker animals are usually there a lot longer.. Thanks for the article, though! That was very interesting.

I've adopted 3 kitties... one was solid black and the other has a bunch of colors but the base is black.

I never would have thought twice about adopting them because they have black fur!

I have heard of black dogs being unpopular and I never understood it. I love all dogs, but I think black dogs are prettier than lighter ones. Though, I'm kind of partial if you notice my avatar..

I've heard the same thing about black dogs being unpopular at the pound.

Our "pound dog" is black and I can say that she is one of the best dogs in the universe! :goodvibes

I didn't hear about black dogs, etc being unpopular. I have always had a black dog. Except I do have a white/tan GSD, who as a puppy I swear would find a speck of dirt and get all over her.
