I am a Tonga Toast virgin, and I plan on trying it for the first time in Dec. Now, I apologize if this question is a little obsessive, but . . .
I have planned to enjoy room service one morning and Kona Cafe another. I really can't switch them due to Kona's opening time being later than room service.

Both Kona and Room Service at the Poly (where I'm staying) offer Tonga Toast. I would feel very strange having my first time be with Room Service instead of the authentic restaurant, it just doesn't feel right, and I'm not even sure it's the same Tonga Toast, but there's not really anything else special on the Room Service menu- I could get pastries and a fruit cup, but it's Disney, so I'd like something more special. If I ordered the Tonga Toast through Room Service I could get the Macadamia Pancakes at Kona Cafe. Two special choices.

So -
should I get Tonga Toast at Kona? or Macadamia Pancakes at Kona and Tonga Toast through Room Service?

(To paraphrase Cher from "Clueless"- You see how particular I am about my breakfast . . . ) ;)

Tonga Toast at Kona...save the pancakes for room service. Gotta have the Tonga Toast nice and fresh.

I think the OP needs to analyze this decision some more- maybe make a graphic organizer w/pros and cons :rotfl2: just kidding. I would get the Tonga Toast at Kona. But I will tell you that the room service at the Poly is really good, too. I like the island potatos.

You've really thought about this, haven't you? LOL! =)

Um, I guess in the restaurant (though I thought Tonga Toast was disgusting I know many others love it and hope you do too - esp since you've been thinking about it so much!). THe restaurant really doesn't have any special ambience to it but it might be better fresh from the kitchen when it gets to you.

To me KONA Breakfast is the best in WDW.

Since I believe that Tonga Toast is simply the banana stuffed french toast from the days of the Poly past, I would agree that fresher is better. We picked up a copy of the WDW cookbook close to 16 years ago and remade the french toast after we got home. It was just as good, but after seeing how it was made I decided never again!

And as a somewhat related note -- If you ever watch Bear in the Big Blue House, and specifically the episode where Bear is holding the book club at his house (and gets the wrong book in the mail) pay close attention to the cookbook he erroniously gets -- "101 Ways to Cook Slop." My DW instantly recognised the "101 Ways" cookbook as a re-front covered WDW Cookbook!!!! They didn't bother changing the back of the book, and it's a perfect match. I wonder if the crew from Bear in the Big Blue House was unhappy with kraft services?!!

As much as I love the TT, I have found the pancakes (Ive only had regular ones) at Kona are some of the best pancakes Ive had. So with that said, I dont think you would miss out on anything if you got TT from room service and pancakes at Kona.

Thank you so much for all your replies!
I am going to check and see if I can get the Macadamia pancakes through room service- they can do pancakes w banana, so I imagine for a little extra, someone can sprinkle a few macadamias in for me. If not, I will get out the graphic organizer . . . :rotfl:
Funniest part- I am an English teacher and I was using a graphic organizer on the board just yesterday.
I am very glad to hear that the majority of people seem happy w/ both the Poly Room Service and Kona. I cannot wait for December!
:cheer2:

I am very particular about my breakfast as well, so you are in good company. My DH even does his little impression of me, waving his hands in the air and announcing in a high voice, "Don't mess with my breakfast!". As if I really look like that...

Anyway, just wanted to give my .02 about Tonga Toast. Being a french toast fan, I was really looking forward to Tonga Toast. You would have thought I expected it to be the highlight of my trip. When I finally tried it, it turned out to be banana stuffed french toast. It was okay, but the earth didn't move - if you know what I'm trying to say here.

Go try the TT, and you should enjoy it. Just don't expect the holy grail of breakfast foods, you may be disappointed. And if you're not disappointed, hey! All the better!
