Bizarre JPEG problem . . . .

So I finally got my Nikon D300 last weekend (Yay! party:) and of course immediately fired off some shots. I processed a few of those RAW files in Lightroom (after downloading the updated version that supports the D300 NEF files), and the JPEGs I exported from there are locking up certain programs on my computer. For instance, if I try to attach one to an email from my gmail account, it locks up my browser. Same thing if I try it from Outlook. It also locks up the PSE organizer if I try to import it into there, but I can open it in PSE, resave it and then do anything I want with it. :badpc: :badpc: :badpc: Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

Not certain exactly what your problem is but you might want to check that they are being saved in lightroom as 8 bit not 16bit. There is a jpeg 2000 format that will save a 16bit image. Most jpegs are 8bit. If it is 16bit then it may not be able to open by other programs that think it is 8bit.

I had the same problem with my D200 when I first tried to save them.

Just a thought.

Congrats on your D300. It is a great camera!

Thanks for the suggestion, but they appear to be 8 bit. It does seem like it must be something along those lines in the Lightroom settings. Other than the new camera, updating LR is the only change I've made.

I think I am going to LOVE this camera. It is a bit intimidating, particularly the degree to which it can be customized. But so far I'm having a great time with it.

What size are the JPGs you're trying to use? Lightroom is probably exporting them at 100% quality, resaving them at even 90% quality will make them much smaller with little difference in quality, and they will be more e-mail friendly. Example: I just checked one jpg that was saved at 100% from my K20D and it's 7.9 megs, resaving it at 90% quality takes it down to 1.78 megs.

Resizing them will make the situation even better - few people want an email with a 12mp jpg image. Try resizing to 800 or 1024 pixels wide before sending.

I think that may be it. I'd forgotten to consider the size of those files, but I'm sure dh won't mind having his inbox jammed with beautiful photos of his children. ;) I usually email pictures from PSE rather than as attachments, which was why I was trying to pull them into the organizer. I only tried sending them as attachments when that didn't work.

Thanks for the advice!
