Va32h's post got me wondering what themes you all have used for your kids' birthday parties.

From my (waning) memory we've done:

Winnie the Pooh
Bumble Bees
Cowboy
Astronaut/space
Police Officer
Spot
Thomas the Tank (twice)
Luau
Gymnastics (at a center)
Farm animals (at a farm)
No real theme at a laser tag place

Power Puff Girls
Disney Princesses
Yu-Gi-Oh
spongebob
ice skating

Our favorite birthday party theme was a tie-dye theme. We found tie-dye plates, napkins, and invitations. The bakery made us tie-dye cupcakes, and the kids tie-dyed shirts to take home. We also had a tie-dye painting activity. It was messy, but fun! The kids wore their shirts all summer to the pool.

My son only started asking to have "friend" parties when he turned 5, before that it was just a family party with whatever kind of cake he wanted.

That first party was a cowboy theme, we went to a farm where they rode ponies and each guest got a hat and bandanna (super cheap from Oriental trading company). Birthday Express - which gets way too much of my money! - had these cool plastic cups shaped like cowboy boots, too.

Last year was a jungle theme; we had an animal handler come to the house, all the kids got safari hats to wear and we played games.

This year - the infamous dogs!

My daughter has had lots of fun parties though. One year was a dress up tea party. I brought all her dress-up clothes downstairs and had them on a clothes bar, with my high heels and purses, hats, boas, gloves, etc. One of my friends worked for Elizabeth Arden at the time and did their makeup and nails. Then we had sandwiches and tea.

Another year, we had a Knights and Princesses party; guests created family crests, had a royal banquet, and went on a "quest" around the yard to find a treasure.

The year I had my son, she had to have a thrown together party, because I was just too pooped (their birthdays are three weeks apart). So that was just a cake, and running in the sprinkler,

My favorite party to plan was the Harry Potter one...I made everyone a simple cotton robes (well, more of a cape) and wands (painted dowels) and when the guests arrived they were sorted into houses, then we had a Feast, and played Harry Potter trivia while they ate, if they got the questions right they won points for their House. Then we had a Potions class which was mixing up different flavors of kool-aid, but the containers were all labeled with things like "asphodel of wormwood" and "crushed scarabs" etc. They added Sprite, so it foamed up. The idea was to create a Finding Potion, so they could find knuts, sickles, and galleons that were hidden in the yard. There was also one Golden Snitch. The person who found that got a special prize. The coins were just wooden craft circles that I had painted. So after everyone found their coins, they could go back inside to "Honeydukes" and use their money to buy Chocolate Frogs, Cockroach Clusters and other Harry Potter themed candy.

Afterward we had broomstick races, on actual broomsticks, and "duels" which we did by tying a balloon to each person's leg...they had to try and stomp on the person's balloon to pop it, while waving the wand around and casting spells.

Last year was a "Movie Premiere" where all the guests got to walk up a red carpet and get their picture taken by paparazzi, leave their handprints at Grauman's Chinese Theater (aka my porch). I took all the furniture out of the living room and made it into a theater, and they watched Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom while I served them drinks and snacks as if I were a waiter. After the movie, they made their own "screen tests" with our video camera and watched them back, and then we gave out awards for best actress, best costume, etc.

This year we are doing the murder mystery, it's all girls so the storyline is that they are all Miss Teen USA contestants and one of them "Kills for the Crown". I did cheat this year and bought the mystery story, it's a really good one though. I am thinking of doing it at a restaurant though, because it's a lot of work to move all the furniture around - we don't have a very big house!

My mom always made very fun parties for us, and all my siblings have inherited that tradition. My brother does incredible parties for his kids. My niece had an American Idol party last year that was hysterical. And my nephew's was a Lilo & Stitch Hawaiian luau.

Pooh
Princess
Tink
Luau
Slumber 'spa' party

Little Mermaid
Hello Kitty
Rubber Ducks
Hot wheels (twice)
Star Wars

My favorite was a "camping" party for my son's 6th birthday. We had a tent and played a storytelling type game inside. We did "there's a snake in my sleeping bag" relay races where they had to run, crawl in the sleeping bag and grab a fake snake and run back, did a treasure hunt in the yard, took a little hike through the woods to skip rocks in our drainage pond, etc. We bbq'd hot dogs and roasted marshmallows. Of course, we had dirt cake with worms. My son was thrilled.

DD is 10. For the first few years, her parties were very simple. Her 1st birthday party had a teddy bear theme. After that I, or she when she got old enough, would pick a character and everything would be centered around that-she has had Disney princesses, Sponge Bob, Winnie the Pooh, Bear in the Big Blue House, and Barbie.

For her 8th birthday, I decided to get creative (for me-I am not the artistic type) and we had a picnic themed birthday party based on one I had seen in a magazine. The invitations were foam "bread slices" with the crust drawn on with brown marker and the information written on them, packaged in sandwich bags with red and white print napkins and cardboard "ants." I attempted to make a picnic blanket cake with ants crawling over it and a cupcake that was sitting on top, but my practice cake did not turn out well so I had a bakery duplicate the cake from a picture in the magazine. Games were dropping clothespins into a jar from above (something we did at my childhood birthday parties) and a hula hoop contest. Goody bags also had a picnic theme, with gummy hot dogs and hamburgers and other assorted picnic goods. Food served included a 6 foot sub sandwich.

For her 9th birthday, she requested a "Survivor" theme. Invitations were messages in a bottle, games were set up somewhat like "Survivor" challenges, and the goody bags were tropical themed. We even divided the girls into "tribes" and they wore different colored bandannas to separate them.

Last year, for her 10th birthday, we had a movie party. Invitations were ticket style (looked like actual concert/play/event tickets) and I rented a popcorn machine and bought movie style candy in individual boxes. For the first time we did not do games and I regretted that, as the movie did not entertain all of the girls and they were bored and restless (it was Disney's "The Wild".")

This year, when she turns 11, I am planning a "Grease" themed party.

I hope I have not been too detailed-I just really enjoy planning these parties. Maybe I missed my calling. Soon she'll be too old to enjoy this, and since she's my only child, I won't get to do these parties any longer!

That Survivor party sounds really cool! We love Survivor in our house...I will have to talk one of my kids into having a party like that next year. Or just for the heck of it.

The picnic party sounds really cute too.

My boys' birthdays are just 3 weeks apart, so we usually have one big family party and then they each do a friend thing. Our favorite party was in spring of 2005, we had a Champions party....Red Sox had won the World Series and Patriots had won the Super Bowl...everything related to the teams and one son had a Red Sox cake, one had a Patriots cake. It was a fun one!

I love doing themed parties! As a kid, I'd start think of ideas months in advance. The year I turned 7, I had a slumber parties and we all decorated t-shirts with our own handprints. When I turned 8, we made oragami boxes and decorated people shaped cookies. My favorite birthday ever, though, was the year I turned 10. I had an American Girl themed birthday based on Samantha. We had lemonade and ice cream and pettifores. We made hair accessories. But the best part was putting on Samantha's play! I assigned roles to all my friends and told everyone what sort of outfit to bring. We did a practice read through, and then my parents video taped us acting it out! (no memorization involved- we held the scripts in our hands.) I still love to go back and watch the video.

When I turned 13, I had a Disney animation themed party. We made animation pinwheels and watched an old Wonderful World of Disney special. I hung my own drawings on the wall for decoration.

Last October, I turned 25, and I wanted to have an old fashioned kiddie birthday party. I bought Disney princess party goods and invited my friends to play in my costume trunk and pose for pictures. We all had so much fun!

When I have kids of my own some day, they are going to have the best birthday parties!
