My DS is turning 9 next month and we are throwing him a Survivor birthday party. It is going to be a big deal for him so we are working hard on it. The theme or "location" for the Survivor is an island type luau place. So I ordered wristbands that say "Time to Tiki" as well as tiki necklaces for the winning team. Now I am thinking about what a tiki is. Am I being unreligious by giving these things to the kids? Will the parents think so? Am I just being nuts? I definitely have a tendency to overthink things. I thought the tiki decorations were cute and I keep singing the Disney Tiki Room song in my head. We go to a small private Christian school and I would not want to offend anyone. I am just trying to throw a party but do not want to go against my religion. Am I crazy?

You are not crazy. Tikis or anything else are not an idol unless you worship it. So unless you are planning a freaky backyard new religion drum fest with sacrifices, etc. don't worry about it. God says no harm no foul in the Christian religion. First commandment - no other Gods before me. You aren't putting any other Gods first so you are cool.

Gee, all that seminary training did me good. Hope your son has a great birthday!

You will have sooo much fun at the party!!! The tiki's should not be a problem......just keep singing "In the tiki, tiki, tiki room!"

My DS turned 10 at the beginning of the month and this was his choice of theme. We did 10 challenges and had a blast. We did not vote anyone off to save on the hurt feelings but I did videotape each one of them voting for the Ultimate Survivor......they gave the funniest reasons why they voted for that person......and yes the question came up many times if they could vote for themselves!!!

Let me know if you need any challenges!

Thanks for your replies. It is good to know that you guys don't think I am doing anything wrong. Anyone else have opinions?

I realized earlier that I think Brady Bunch has scarred me. My DH and I were talking about the episode where Greg has the tiki necklace on his neck and gets hurt surfing. And wouldn't you know it, that episode came on tonight. Maybe that is why I am warped.
