Birthday party goody bag.......fireworks?

Took ds to a friend's bday party today. There were kids ranging in age from 18 months to 5 there...............the theme was Sesame Street, in the goody bags were those champagne bottle popper fireworks. I took the one out of my son's bag immediately, but apparently one little 5 year old actually popped his facing it the wrong way and burned his arm.

This mom really seemed as if she didn't think it would be a problem. She said she always checks her kids' goody bags as soon as they get them and she thought parents would see them and take them out to do with the kids.

When I got there, she was setting up and there were two bags that looked different..........I asked about them and she said those were the bags for the littlest ones as they had no hard candy in them so the kids wouldn't choke.

How many people do you think really don't know that those "kid pack" fireworks contain gunpowder too?

I personally would never put that kind of stuff in a goody bag, and would not be happy to find it in one that my son got. Yes, I do see what is in his bag, but not usually until we get home. That is just a tragedy waiting to happen. You can't assume that parents are going to find the fireworks first.

Why are some people allowed to procreate?

We don't have kids, but have a good idea of how we want them raised and waht we want them exposed to. That seems off on many accounts. Yes, she may check the bag as soo as the child arrives home, but I will bet my bottom dollar that the child went through it first...

It's at least p-poor judgement on her part... and could be considered child endangerment or negligence, I would believe. What is the family of the hurt child doing about it? Have they called or spoken with her?

The mom of the hurt child talked about it to the hostess at the party. The one who had the party just seemed surprised. That's when she told me she thought the parents would see it first. She did say later she wasn't sure if the lady was talking about at her party or on the 4th. I said I thought she meant at the party. She said she might call her later (this is after that family had gone).

Those champagne poppers are sold at walmart in the birthday party favor section. Maybe she then just assumed they were harmless??

There's no doubt she thought they were harmless. Though she didn't buy them in the party favors, she did buy them at a stand..............but I just wondered are there lots of people, do you think, that don't know these can hurt a child?

Well are those the ones with gun powder or confetti !! I am shocked Wal-Mart sells a party favor w/gun powder !!!

I have NEVER EVER seen them in our Wal-Mart here in MA in any section of the store!

But then again all states have different laws on fireworks!
