I know there has been a thread about this before, but I didn't pay attention to it as I wasn't in the planning stages...now I wish I had. Sorry.

We're going to celebrate my DD's 11th birthday at WDW and will already have park passes. I see she can get a Birthday Fun Card on her birthday instead of park admission. It looks like there are so many restrictions on as to what she can spend it on. Is merchandise about all it can be used for?

You can use it on a few other things too -like tours, or use it towards the purchase or renewal of an AP. It's not good for food/drinks, and it's not good at many non-Disney owned stores, like certain shops in Epcot, even for merchandise.

They give you an information sheet when you get the card telling you what it is and isn't good for.

I am sure your child will not have any trouble spending it. The only restriction really is on meals, food. My daughter bought a tote bag, a pair of mickey sneakers, a stuffed minnie mouse, and some other small things. It was a great birthday gift. The world of disney in DTD has a great selection of just about everything, and almost all the gift shops, etc are included just not certain ones in each country of epcot.
