Birthday Dinners! Do you do them?

And by Birthday dinner, I don't mean a big party or going out to a restaurant, I mean do you prepare (or have prepared for you) a favorite meal for a birthday? When I was growing up, we always got to pick our birthday breakfast and dinner--and to this day, my mom will still make me a blueberry buckle (it's a super-moist blueberry coffee cake) for my birthday breakfast.

We've carried the tradition on in my family, and tonight my son (who turns 10 today at 4pm!) picked stuffed shells, garlic bread, and salad for dinner, with strawberry cake (which to him is a yellow cake with white frosting and fresh berries on top and between the layers) for dessert. The lucky son-of-a-gun is also getting a birthday dinner at Grandma's house tomorrow, and he picked chicken and dumplings.

So what about you? What would you pick for your favorite meal?

Yes, my parents still do them, even though the three of us are married with our own kids, she has us all over for our birthdays and makes whatever we want. This past Sunday we went for my dad's birthday dinner. I've also started it in my house. I make my husband whatever he wants for his birthday and I invite his parents and brother over for dinner. My daughter is only going to be two so I will probably get pizza's this year (she loves pizza) and invite the grandparents, aunts & uncles and her cousins for dinner. When she is old enough I will let her decide what she wants.

As for my favorite meal, ravioli, garlic bread and salad, plus an all chocolate ice cream cake from Carvel.

As a kid, our parents would take out the birthday kid for a special dinner. With 7 sublings - that was such a treat! It was just Mom/Dad/birthday kid. Occasionally, my brother & I would go out with them together since our birthdays are only 5 days apart. We got to choose our type of home-made cake.
With my kids, they got breakfast in bed & they chose their dinner. I think we usually took them out to dinner on their birthdays, but if it wasn't possible to go out, I'd fix their favorites. When our oldest turned 21, he had finals on that day, but when he made it home from college, we took him to one of the expensive restaurants in town.

Yes, I do them. Sometimes one of us chooses a favorite restaurant instead though. For Chris' birthday in January, I did baked spaghetti. I think he picked that two years in a row.

Yes - we do the favorite birthday dinner too. My children are grown. Our two daughters have moved out. Our son is in college. We still do this for ourselves or if anyone visits for their birthday.

Interesting meals over the years. My son always liked a little bit of alot of things. Many a year we had to eat a boiled egg, jello, olives, string cheese, peanut butter crackers - just whatever came to his mind and were his favorites. He hasn't changed much. He is now 21 and just ordered lasagna with olives cooked inside for his past birthday.

We knew we were headed for trouble when our eldest daughter wanted lobster for her third birthday. Yup - it was an insight!!

We do birthday dinners here. Dh always chooses lobster, Ds(almost 20) used to choose Kraft mac n' chees when he was young but now always goes for a steak, DD (11) usually picks pizza and Dd (5) picks McDonalds or spaghetti. I usually get taken out for dinner.

My favorite birthday traditions, though, were started by my mother. She always allowed us to eat Birthday Cake for breakfast the day after. That was a real treat for a kid.

She also had the tradition that you got out of dinner chores on your birthday. As an adult, I miss that one!

My mom would always make a t-bone dinner for me for my bday. With pecan or million dollar pie with candles since I don't eat cake. Now that I'm older, she just takes me out to eat somewhere.

I make my SO his favorite meal on his bday. Pork chops, etc.

I try to make my kids' their favorite meal on their bday, or I take them to the restaurant of their choice for their bday. Usually they choose to go out to eat. We took my dd out to O'Charley's for her bday on Monday. Last year, my ds wanted to eat at the Radio Grill at Walmart for his bday. This year, he says he wants to go to a Japanese restaurant (he's already put in his request to me 3 months early, we'll see if he changes his mind between now and then).

My mom and dad always did birthday dinners. My birthday is in a few weeks and my mom is already asking me what I want. All I know is the cake (homemade) has to be chocolate, chocolate, chocolate!!

My Mom used to do that for us, but I didn't carry over the tradition! We go out to eat! DS#1 likes Cracker barrel and DS#2 likes Olive Garden.

Mom and Dad take us out for dinner, but Grandma, Grandma makes anything you want! Mmmmmm! And, Grandma not only does this on your birthday, but anytime you come "home" (ie from College, from across town, etc, etc.).

You can call an hour before and say, "hey Grandma, what's for dinner?" and she'll say, "what would you like to have and when will you be here?" Sometimes it is fun to leave the adult world behind and go to Grandma's!

We have a tradition of celebrating our grown children's BD with their fav dinner and dessert at home with all the family. The youngest and family are in Seattle, so unfortunately no get together . Our son was born on Xmas eve, so luckily he is usually home fr military on leave.

We consider ourselves blessed, our children and my Mom take turns doing the same for us.

Yep! Birthday person always gets to pick the place =) We don't ever cook at home to celebrate, because going out to eat is/was a real treat since it is rare that we can afford to do it...

My MIL tends to fix something special for the birthday person, though, and I don't look forward to that as much LOL. She always cooks, why is that special, ha ha. =)

We usually go out to dinner depending on where the birthday person wants to go, but I have had several times growing up when I just wanted to stay home and have my mom make me my favorite foods.

We always get to choose our birthday meal. My birthday is always close to or sometimes on Memorial Day so my choice is usually something dealing with a barbecue. We use to get to choose a place to go out to eat, but once my sister and I got older we chose to have a homemade meal and it still continues!!!

Yes we have a birthday dinner for our birthdays. We celebrate by going out to eat the birthday person choose.

My mom aunt decide to a Japenese outing and non of the family members likes Japen food. I was the person that end up getting sick.


My birthday is next one coming up so i get to choose the place. Since i had to Japenese outing she is going to the Golden Corral for dinner.

Me and Mom will have our own private celebrate do something that I really won't to.

My choices so is:

Festival

Our son turned 16 yesterday and we do the "special meal" thing for the kids too!

Our son's choice yesterday was: tortellina with red sauce, salad, garlic bread, and instead of a cake, lemon meringue pie--all homemade, of course!

Our daughter (approaching 14 ) usually favors the comfort foods: beef and noodles, mashed potatoes, rolls (see a starch pattern here?), and I make her choose a green vegetable--usually green beans or broccoli. Unlike her brother, she prefers the cake--decorated to the hilt and piled high with whipped frosting! She's also got a sweet tooth!

The birthday person gets a special breakfast of their choice and then a meal of choice for dinner. The dinner can be something cooked or a meal at a favorite restaurant, it is all up to the birthday person.

DH just had a birthday a couple of weeks ago. I made all his "stinky" favorites that I don't like to make because the house smells for days afterwards. Kilbausa w/saurkraut and brussel sprouts. He had spice cake for dessert - no frosting - he doesn't eat it.

DS had his birthday breakfast at Donald's Breakfasaurus in Jan. after a couple of hours at AK - we headed to Disney Quest. Dinner was Pizza Planet - the evening entertainment was Fantasmic
