we are leaving in two weeks and I wanted to order a custom cake for my son's bday. I thought I knew the prices and whatnot, but I was finishing up reading the birthday cake thread and now see that everything has gone up.

We wanted an 8' cake with a disney/pixar cars image on it. It was looking to be around $35 and now it will cost $90!

Any ideas on what I should do now? I am so disappointed. Should I try my luck at the bakery that day hoping for something nice looking? Or just do the free cupcake?

I am pretty sure that they will give your child a free cupcake but you might want to call Disney and ask what the price of what kind of cake you want would be. The price you said sounds very high for what you are asking for. I know in Aug of 2007 we went and got a 6 inch cake for my daughter with just Happy Birthday and some sprinkle things on it and I think it cost $13. I would call and verify if I were you.

We got a Mickey Cake B-Day in the food court. It was good and it wasn't $90.00.

Publix can do a beautiful cake in a range of flavors and filling flavors and designs. Hopefully, you have transport? You can call ahead and order the cake and have it ready for pick up when you need it. They are quite reasonable and very good!

The closest Publix to WDW (DTD as the starting point) is the one just behind Premium Outlet.

I may be wrong, but I don't believe they can do Pixar characters (I know they can't do Pooh and friends, and I don't believe they own the rights to Pixar, either). Have you called the cake hotline and just asked?

The bakery at the boardwalk has beautiful cakes. i would go in there and check them out.

We've ordered the 8" custom cakes a few times over the last few years when they were $25 and were very pleased with them. But, IMO the quality has gone down along with the prices going up. We most recently ordered an 8" cake at Liberty Tree Tavern for lunch over XMAS 2008 and it ws $32 and was obviously one that they'd pulled out of the freezer and just written the birthday greeting on (with brown icing - didn't even match the rest of the cake). I think it was larger than expected (10" instead of 8") and there was more than enough to go around for our party of 8, but it just wasn't really very good. :sad1:

I think I'm done ordering Disney's cakes for now.
