Birthday Button "Etiquette"?

My birthday is July 19 and I'm going August 4. I'mturning 21 so I plan on celebrating there, I'm going to wear the pin all week and I'm gonna flaunt it. Sue me!!

Why would someone even wear a Birthday Button if you did not want the attention and free goodies? Especially when it's worn day-in and day-out throughout a vacation. IMO it the button says "Pay attention to ME! I'm special! I deserve pixie dust and a treat!" And if you did indeed tell Disney that it was your birthday when it was not, that really isn't "right" is it? Technically, you are "celebrating your birthday" from sometime in the last or next 6 months.

Like I said on my first post on this subject there are no "Birthday Button Police". Do what you want. Wear the button all day, every day for your entire trip to garner all the attention and pixie dust and free goodies you can. Disney is a-okay with that :thumbsup2. While I won't go as far to call it "greedy" or "attention grabbing", I can't help but feel that wearing the button all vacation is excessive and detracts from the "specialness" of it. It is, after all, a birthday button and not a birthweek button or birthvacation button. That's just my opinion and answers the original question ... speaking of which "etiquette" is such an interesting word. It doesn't ask "Could I do a certain thing?" it asks "Should I do a certain thing?" and while "Could" is pretty cut and dried "Should" is open to individual interpretation.

Well my plans for 2015 is to just were the birthday button on my birthday and the rest of the trip just have a 1st visit because it will be my first time at DL and DCA

HAPPY BIRTHDAY and I hope you get lots of PIXIE DUST! I am going Oct 5 and my bday is OCT 23...Gonna wear that button and be happy!

I can't believe there is such a serious debate about Birthday Buttons.
That's all I have to say about this!:confused3

Hahaha I know right!! I love that pin! Happy birthday to you too!!!

The kids are going to wear the pins one day. DS liked the pin but didn't like the strangers talking to him.

My son's 6th birthday is at the end of July and we are going in September. Going to WDW is the only thing he's asked for his bday and If he wants to wear that button all week, fine. Only one day, fine. I am going ahead and telling all our servers at restaurants we do not want birthday cupcakes etc. because we are already on the dining plan and get free desserts. I'm doing this to make him feel special, not get free treats.

Great point. We are Seasonal Passholders, but my DD's birthday occurs a week into our blackout period so we can't visit the parks for her birthday but that is truly where she WANTS to celebrate.

We are going this weekend instead (about a month early) because it's the best weekend that fits our schedule & is still while our passes are active. This trip IS her birthday celebration other than just having cake with family on her actual bday. It is her GIFT from mom & dad - 2 days in the parks, meals, hotel, souvenirs.

Yes, I will happily pin a Birthday Button to her shirt when we arrive, because we are there TO celebrate her birthday, and I won't think twice about it. But I'm also not looking for any freebies or handouts, it's about making her feel special in the place that makes her happiest.:goodvibes

I turned 50 in January and have been planning to celebrate in Disney for the past 5 years. I will not be doing this until October because 1) I celebrated my 40th at Disney on my actual birthday and it was cold and we all got sick and 2) fall is my favorite time of the year. And yes, I plan to wear a birthday button the entire time. I don't care if I get anything free or not. Just letting the world know that I made it to 50 and want to celebrate it!

Happy 50th!!!! I hope I see you in October and will wish you HB then too!!! pixiedust:

On our last trip, my little DS's 1st birthday was the day before we left for WDW, and I did note it in our reservation. He really only "wore" his button the day we were officially celebrating with lunch with Pooh at Crystal Palace. They sang to him, brought out cake, and Pooh and friends did a special birthday "parade" around the restaurant for him! He also got a signed card from Mickey at the hotel. It was a perfect amount of birthday pixie dust, and I didn't feel the need for CM's to constantly wish him "Happy Birthday" all week long! (He was only 1!) ;)

This year, my birthday is 9 days before we leave, DH's is 3 weeks before, and my big DS's birthday is 2 weeks after we get back. I almost feel silly celebrating all of them since this trip wasn't really about celebrating birthdays, and none of the dates technically fall during the trip. (Truthfully, I picked the timeframe based the cost and crowds) But I know DS wants to celebrate while at Disney, and honestly I'd rather give my birthday pixie dust to my DS anyway! pixiedust: So I'll note his birthday on the reservation, I will do one special ADR as his "birthday dinner", and he can wear his birthday button as much or as little as he wants!

And a note on having birthday parties NOT on someone's birthday: big DS's birthday is December 21st. We never celebrate his party within 2 weeks of that. I either throw a party January 21st, or on June 21st (his half birthday!) All the more reason to let him claim our Dec 2013 trip as his "birthday celebration"! :bday:

One of these days I would like to go for my Birthday but it is in August and honestly I do not want to deal with the crowds or heat at that time of the year.

I wouldn't celebrate that far out. With our family, we could always fine a "nearby" birthday to celebrate. My oldest daughter's will be 1 month after our trip, but we won't do that.

We were there in May 2010 and one of my dd's turned 6 while we were there. That was fun. She wore her button all week. It was also the week of our anniversary.

Oh wow, now I sort of feel bad....we are going next week....and we are going with a large family.... Now the week we are going is my nephew third birthday and my daughter second is tomorrow...so we asked for buttons...now my two sons just celebrated there birthdays in April and I didn't want them to be left out so I got them buttons... It's not about getting freebies...we have the dinning plan so snacks are included at dinners. Just wanted everyone to feel special as we don't go to Disney very often....

Don't let people make you feel bad!! It's your vacation and you spent plenty on it.., celebrate anything you want!!! Those "free" birthday cupcakes are anything but free with the cost of your dinner and they make your child's visit to the world all the more special!!! Let them enjoy every second. It's all about the magic of Disney.

When we went for my DD's 2nd birthday we put her button on for the whole trip even though it was a couple of weeks after her birthday. After that we went for my 30th which was while we were there but I only wore my button for a couple of hours on my birthday. Wear your button for as much or little time as you like, it is nice to have people wish you Happy Birthday but after a while I got a bit embarrassed about it! (I'll freely admit that I'm a bit of a queerhawk when it comes to things like that, lol!) Have a great trip!!! :goodvibes

Thank you, we are also celebrating my graduation from college! Which is tomorrow on my daughters birthday so I won't get to spend that with her! We just want to have a good time and are not trying to scam anyone! My kids don't even like sweets lol! But they would love to hear happy birthday all week!

Congratulations!! There are absolutely scammers out there(think manhattan socialites hiring disabled people to cut lines). Wearing a celebration button~such a silly thing to debate!!! Enjoy your graduation/birthday celebrations!!!
