What documents did you take for your kids? My dh (their father) and I are taking them and I have their regular short form birth certificates. For business travel, my dh says he only needs his birth certificate and Ontario driver's lisence. Are the short form birth certificates okay for the kids? Do we need the long forms? Passports? On the government website they recommend passports but dh says that's unecessary. What's your experience? We'll be crossing by car at the Peace Bridge in Fort Erie, flying from Buffalo.

We just went to disney in Feb, we drove and went across at Port Huron. Anyway, all you need for the kids is their regular birth certificate. (short form I guess it is called.) And adults need theirs as well as photo ID. I think that next year that passports will be a must for us to cross over which kind of sucks. Have a nice vacation!

As of January 1, 2007 all canadians need a passport to get in and out of the United States. Get them earlier rather than waiting til last minute. My friend works in the Mississauga office and they are expecting a major influx this fall/winter of passport applications.

You probably won't need them, but they would make things easier and quicker. We got them for our kids and ourselves (we flew from Thunder Bay, through Toronto) and were asked for them when got our boarding passes, at security, at customs and again when we were boarding the plane. I asked at customs if they were really necessary and she said no, but they make things go a lot quicker - and yes, next year you will need them.
