So the ---- birds are trying to build a nest behind my front porch light. I keep knocking the twigs down that are between the light and my house. I have pinwheels spinning in the garden which is right off my front porch and that doesn't deter them. I knock the twigs down and an hour later there are more there. Any suggestions on how to discourage them from building this nest?

We had this as a recurring problem too. I eventually stuck a clear disposable storage container, like gladware, behind the light fixture. That solved the problem. It blocked the space and was tight enough not to fall out. Its not terribly attractive up close, but since its clear its not noticeable from far away. After several years its still there and still doing its job!

Good luck!

Speaking from experience, the owls don't work long-term. Once the birds figure out that they aren't real, they are useless. I even got one with a solar powered moving head and that was of no use. Birds were ruining our front porch, building nest behind shutters, on the edges of our porch columns and on top of any semi-flat surface. My husband cut diagonal pieces of wood and painted them to match the surrounding area and attached them anywhere the birds were nesting. Now they cant get anything built because of the angle. :flower1:

I had this exact problem last year. I eventually gave up and let them have their way.

So, if you can't get rid of them, you get to look forward to:

- Mommy Bird glaring at you every time you come or go like she's planning on pecking your eyes out.
- Endless cheeps and peeps when you're trying to watch TV, read, eat, nap, or pretty much do anything in the room nearest them.
- And most fun, having tiny birdy heads pop up with their mouths wide open every time you go in or out. Feed me!

I recommend diligence. Don't give up like I did! Oh, and this year Neighbor Kitty was nice enough to offer assistance. (RIP birdy... :sad1: )

Good luck!

I tried plastic container lids as the containers were to thick. Stuck the lids between the lamp and the house and the birds started to build a nest on top of the lids!!!!!!!!! Going to try the aluminum foil next. Ill keep you posted.

Do you know anyone with a trained falcon? Maybe an owl?

Had this problem last year. Problem is the light is RIGHT next to the main door going in and out of the house. Each time you walked out the door you were greeted with a flurry of wings and feathers. Leaving the nest would have meant getting pecked at each time you went out the door and on top of that bird crap everywhere..the door, the mailbox, everywhere. I put a box up but that kept blowing away so I also used rolled up screen material that I could bend and press into place.

Our light is the same. I refuse to be held hostage in my own home by something that weighs less than 3 oz. I knock it down every time I see a nest beginning to form and usually after a few days they get the hint and go somewhere else.

We had a pair of doves build a nest under a downspout just below our roof. The problem was that crows were always bothering the birds. They would stand at the edge of the roof and try to poke their heads into the nest. One day we came home to find the nest abandoned and the eggs shattered on the ground. Obviously something catastrophic happened and it wasn't a safe place to build a next. The next year I discovered a few twigs in the exact same spot. I knocked the twigs down and wedged a block of wood into the spot. It was for their own good because that had already proven not to be a safe spot for a nest. Hopefully they found a better place.

We have spot on our roof that has a gap due to two different rooflines converging. The birds that that was a great place to build a nest. After climbing up there too many times to clear out the nest building efforts, we bought some chicken wire and put it across the front of the gap.

Maybe you could form a "cage" that would fit around your light and affix it to the wall/door frame so they can't get to that area?

This is weird but we had a bird that would build a nest on the top of a column at our entrance way. DH put a plastic toy dinosaur up there and it kept her away.

We sprayed pepper spray onto the light. They have never ever been back! No birds were there just the starting of the nest.

My mom once had a blue jay build at nest in the shrub right next to her front door. They're nasty birds!! The Daddy Jay would keep watch from a nearby tree and attack when someone approached the front door. Or if you were inside the house and opened the inner door to look thru the storm door, the Daddy would fly to the railing and DARE you to come out. Everyone had to use the back door until the little babies grew up and left the nest.

Is that legal? At the very least it wouldn't be a good place to be for a few hours. There are stories about intentional or accidental discharges of pepper spray that caused people to get sick from the fumes.

After a while it dissapates and may be an animal attractant. I've heard of some who thought that "bear spray" could be applied as a preventative repellant. It works full strength as an irritant right into a bear's head, but the weakened fumes may even be an attractant. BTW, most who spray their tents with this stuff find that it's almost impossible to stay in one due to the fumes, if the initial fumes didn't do something first.
