We are beginning to see the first written warnings regarding Bird Flu up here. They are suggesting a 72-hour supply of food and water, medicine and batteries. What is your area suggesting (if anything)?

nothing unusual especially since human avian flu doesnt even exist. I am really annoyed at all the media hype, scaring people over something that might or MIGHT NOT happen. The only thing I would consider is the regular supplies that the Red Cross suggests you always have on hand. I refuse to bow to media pressure and hype!

*To the OP, my diatribe is in no way aimed at you, it was an innocent question, it just cheeses me off that this nonsense is going on.*

some states are putting emergency plans together - I have heard everything from a couple weeks to a couple months depends - they are not actually sending the info out to us...but just putting plans together, just in case....one researcher at CDC a few months back said he personally had 6 months - but that, of course, is not official. I believe that is also based on the thought that it will hit regionally in waves, not so much that it will last 6 months straight - and he is clearly in the worst case scenario group.

Personally, I am stocking up little by little, much as they advise to be ready for any other emergency...maybe a little more - I know this will get me accusations of panic/ the sky is falling...I am ready to duck at the accusations...I am in no panic - this may happen, it may not...I am totally recognizing the fact that when it is all said and done it may all ahve been for nothing - and that is my hope.

I don't listen to the media hype...I listen to the experts..I know and realize it even happening is no given, let alone the worst case scenarios...but the experts agree it is a real possibility and I choose to prepare for that possibility.

IF it does happen, I am thinking 72 hours is not nearly enough - I had heard things like this run in waves of a couple weeks...the last three major power outages I experieinced lasted longer than 72 hours!!

ah well, getting the popcorn....

well, I am have been to meetings with CDC, microbiologists, and the bottom line it is going to come, it is just a matter of when. we are long over due....

Do you mean "going to come" to humans? :guilty:

Or just to our poultry supply?

it will mutate to humans, it could be 1 day or a year or two. but to quote his words....."It is just a matter of time". BUT not to go nuts about it, but to keep up on what is going on, and just go about your life.

will I stock up, yes... but feel everyone should do so with the way the weather has been, it is changing. better safe then sorry.

I just wish this TV show tomorrow night was not going to be on. that is going to make matters worse for sure.

I just think everyone just needs to be educated about it, and not totally dismiss it.

What TV show?
I saw one the other day, hosted by Newt Gingrich. It was pretty informative.
ABC is running a made for TV movie tomorrow night at 8:00 PM (eastern time) about this becoming a pandemic. From reviews, it seems like it's going to be a BAD movie all the way around, plus it'll probably create somewhat of a panic. I'll watch, but I'm not climbing on board that the sky is falling just yet.

I work in a hospital and they're asking us to prioritize medications (like choose one anti-psychotic, one anti-depressant, etc.) and have at least a 10 to 12 week supply of each to cover our patients.

Personally, it all feels like the Y2K hype to me, but better safe than sorry.

Okay, perhaps someone here will answer in detail, because I've gotten no answers-
I go on web sites, & it's either coming tomorrow or it's all hype--but no solid info on how to prevent, or cope with the actual disease.

What exactly will a hospital do for patients?

How do you care for persons in your family who get Bird flu? what precautions can you take from getting it yourself--I mean if you're actually tending someone who is sick?

I am understanding that a simple face mask will not do--does this mean we all don Scott suits? Is there a 'happy' medium?
What hand cleanser do we use? is regular Softsoap antibacterial enough or just what should we be purchasing?

I know to get Gatorade, Pedialyte, Immodium, Tylenol but what else?

I am not panicked--just want to be prepared. Knowledge is power, yep.

I do remember my DGram's stories of the 1918 flu epidemic, so I know it's possible, maybe even 'overdue'. I am also aware of the angle of fear used to control populations & bring profits in certain sectors.

thanks in advance for any info.

Well, I bought a flat of water..............really we just should have it, but I did buy it because people have talked about this, and I realized we didn't have any water. I didn't buy a ton, though, just a few bottles. We always keep some canned food..........probably only about 3 days worth. We have batteries and radios, and a hand crank weather radio flashlight that we got for tornado weather.

However, I don't know what we'll do if it becomes an epidemic. If a pandemic, I'm sure schools will close, but an epidemic...........well, if school is open I have to be there, which means my kids must be in their schools as well. There's no real way to just stay home unless the schools shut down. If that happens, we sure won't leave the house.

I'd like to know what the experts really think, and not just their "well it COULD"..............yes, but a lot COULD...........Iran COULD shoot nuclear weapons at us, too, but we don't know anything yet. I have a friend whose husband does "that which cannot be named" and she says that he only says they must be ready (all he really CAN say is what she says.............his job is very cloak and dagger), because "it's coming and it's gonna be bad".................

I just don't believe it yet, I guess. I guess that comes from growing up with no real "plagues" of any sort in my lifetime.

I guess i don't understand--why are we stocking up like we would for a hurricane?

What does that do? Will we not be allowed to leave the house?

if it does ever hit, it will shut production as we know it down. stores will not be stocked like they are now. not to mention having to go out in public if it did get to that point.

I really do not comprehend why this is such an issue, there are hurricanes, tornados, blizzards etc, what is the big deal just "being prepared" for yourselves and your families.

Knowledge about what is going on around you is a GOOD thing, denial is not. :confused3

Thanks for the response. I wasn't in denial of anything.

The DISboards is the first place i heard about this. Simply asked a question regarding importance. No need to be rude in your response.
